Best time to visit Kanyakumari

The beautiful city of Kanyakumari is located at the southernmost tip of India. Besides the popularity of this geographical location, the place is a renowned centre for art and culture, and is also a busy pilgrimage destination. With so many reasons to add Kanyakumari to the bucket list, it’s a great thing that the place experiences a moderate climate all throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Kanyakumari is in winter, from October to March. The weather is cool and pleasant, with a warm sun to give company, making it an ideal time for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Since it is a coastal town, summers are cooler than most places, but humidity is high, making it difficult to roam around the place during all hours of the day. Early mornings and evenings are cooler. Kanyakumari gets a heavy monsoon and it makes the town even more beautiful.

Kanyakumari was called ‘Cape Camorin’ during the British rule and back then too, it was a place of immense historical significance and a popular tourist spot among the locals as well as the British. The economy today runs mainly on agriculture, fishing and tourism, all of which are dependent on the seasons.

Kanyakumari is undoubtedly a beautiful destination for a vacation. Whether with family or with friends or even as a solo traveller, the place has plenty of attractions that will fill your holiday with memories to cherish.

Summer Season (March-May)

Tourists visiting Kanyakumari in summer will be greeted with pleasant weather. Yes, the days can be hot and humid but the evenings usher in the cool breeze from the sea and it is a wonderful time to walk along the coast.

Monsoon Season (June-September)

Kanyakumari becomes even more beautiful during the monsoon when the rain-washed facades of all the buildings gleam in the light. Rainfall is heavy and while it might serve as an inconvenient interlude to a lovely holiday, rain lovers will enjoy the splash of the rain as it hits the Indian subcontinent first in Kanyakumari.

Winter Season (December-February)

The ideal time to visit Kanyakumari is between the months of October to March when you can go sightseeing and participate in water adventures at the beach. This is also when Kankyakumari’s famous Cape Festival is celebrated. December to February is peak winter which is a pleasant time to visit with no humidity and pleasant breeze.

Kanyakumari in Summers (March to May)

Temperature: Avg. of 35 degrees high to 20 degrees low

Weather: Kanyakumari in summer is hot and humid, but it is still not a bad time to visit. Many attractions of the place are open during this season, giving you a chance to see them up close. The early weeks of summer are a better time to visit since the sun is not too harsh yet and there is a cool breeze wafting in from the ocean. In such a climate, you can easily walk the whole day, covering many sightseeing destinations in a day. Apart from that, the beach is open during summer too, giving you a chance to swim in the water, laze on the beach or go surfing. April onwards the sun starts to beat down hard and it can get impossible to head out during daytime.

Significant events: Every day offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the spectacular show put together by the sun and the skies. Being the southernmost tip of India means you get the complete sky to yourself when you gaze upon the setting sun against the liquid horizon of Kanyakumari. If you are in Kanyakumari on a full moon night, you will see a spectacle that is nearly impossible to see anywhere else. As the sun sets in the west, the full moon rises from the east, bathing the beach and water with its milky glow. The next morning, you can watch the same event unfold, but in the opposite direction. The moon sets as the sun rises at the same time. Mid-march is the best time to catch the sun setting in the sea.

If you love flowers, you will be delighted to know that you are barely 30 minutes away from Asia's largest wholesale flower market. Thovalai, to the north of Kanyakumari, grows an unusual variety of jasmine, and the market air is heady with the fragrance of the scented buds in the early hours of the morning. Roses, marigolds and other flowers simply make the place look even more beautiful. You need to get there early though. The market opens before sunrise and closes by 10 a.m.

Why you should visit now: Summer is not a popular tourist season which means it is perfect for traveling. The place is less crowded and accommodation rates are much lower than usual – a double deal as good as any.

Know before you visit: A coastal town, Kanyakumari is hot and humid. Pack light, cotton or linen clothes, or others in a similar breathable fabric.

Tips: Use a strong sunblock frequently when you step out.

Kanyakumari in Monsoon (June to September)

Temperature: Avg. of 31 degrees high to 24 degrees low

Weather: The weather of Kanyakumari in monsoon is beautiful if you love the rains. The soaked land releases its heady aroma into the air and the temperature drops considerably too. The rainfall is heaviest in June and July, and reduces ever so slightly in August making it a good time to plan your vacation. You can expect intermittent drizzles that add to the allure of a coastal town.

Significant events: The much-awaited southwest monsoon arrives at the Indian mainland in early June. And begins its upward journey from Kanyakumari where it hits first. There is nothing quite like standing on the beach, looking out to the sea, watching the dark clouds rolling in, and feeling the rush of the first life-giving raindrops on your face. This is, quite honestly, an unbeatable experience and you can enjoy it only at Kanyakumari.

Why you should visit now: Only true rain-lovers visit Kanyakumari during the monsoon. This means the crowds are smaller. Plus, being offseason you can get fantastic deals on hotels and tour packages.
