Rameshwaram in Winter (October – March) 

Temperature - The air temperature during winter fluctuates between 20°C and 30°C.

Weather – Situated on a scenic island and also being a beautiful coastal region dotted with beaches, the months from October to March bring with them some relief from the constant humidity in the air. With comfortable mornings and cozy nights, the weather becomes drastically cooler as the temperature falls, making it the best time to visit Rameswaram. Sightseeing and adventure activities become popular options at this time of the year because of the agreeable weather. Head to the Olaikuda Beach to catch sight of flamingos that migrate to this tropical hamlet during the winter season. 

Significant events – Though not cold enough to be called the sweater weather, this tropical town’s beauty is accentuated by the cool breezes that visit it at this time of the year. The ancient edifices stand tall, exude history and royalty and are best explored at this time of the year. The highlight of this season is the Kanda Sashti festival that is celebrated in November in temples all over Rameswaram. This festival is dedicated to Lord Murugan and begins on the New Moon day of Aippasi. Lord Murugan’s and Devasens’s celestial wedding at temples draws a number of tourists and locals. 

Another festival that is grandly celebrated at this time of the year is Arudra Darshan. Celebrated in the month of December, the Arudra signifies Lord Shiva’s cosmic dance. Arudra Darshan is celebrated on a grand scale in all the Shiva temples. After viewing Lord Natraj’s procession, the day ends with Ragi Kali, a special dish distributed to devotees. Holy baths and pujas are performed in temples throughout the day.

Rameshwaram in Monsoon (July – September) 

Temperature - The air temperature during the season of monsoon ranges between 28°C and 35°C.

Weather – The beaches at this time of the year look like a dream as the Rain Gods shower their love down on this coastal region. The temperatures drop down quite a bit during the monsoon. You can also visit the Villoondi Theertham Beach to enjoy and soak up the sun during the day if you feel a little cold at this time of the year.

Significant events – The hamlet at this time of the year looks extravagant with droplets of rain sprinkled all over it. With pilgrims flocking to this sacred town not just for its beauty but festivals, there are a number of them you could attend at this time of the year. One of them being Thirukalyanam. This seventeen-day festival is one of the longest in Rameswaram, held in the months of July and August. This festival celebrates the marriage of Lord Ramanatha and Goddess Parvatavardhini. If you visit during this time of the year, you will witness processions and numerous cultural functions across the town. 

Why you should visit now – The weather during monsoon is pleasant and provides relief from the heat of the scorching sun in the summer. Moreover, the tourist season is no longer at its peak and you can enjoy this hamlet in some isolation. 

Things to know before the visit – Do check the weather reports before booking your tickets as the hamlet does receive heavy rainfall at times. Look out for discounts or offers since the tourist season starts to get a little lean at this time of the year. Make it a point to book a hotel that is centrally located and accessible.

Rameshwaram in Summer (April – July) 

Temperature - The air temperature during autumn fluctuates between 27°C and 40°C.

Weather – The weather of Rameswaram in summer is hot and sunny with the sun shining down on you. Tourist bookings slow down at this time of the year because of the relentless sun. However, you can still explore the town before noon or in the evening. 

Significant events – The merciless sun, however, fails to burn out the spirit of this town and its people. One of the highlights of this season is the Panguni Uththiram festival with grand events organised in temples all over Tamil Nadu. Devotees walk to these temples on foot to mark their love and devotion for Lord Murugan as they carry milk pots on their shoulders and heads as offerings to these temples. The most significant festival, however, is held at Palani hill, dedicated to Lord Muruga. 

Why you should visit now – With the tourist season at an all-time low, you will be able to spend some quality time with your family. You can also engage in water sports such as the stand-up board or paddleboard activities in May. You could also go for the banana ride and jet ski rides in the summer season.
