How to Reach By Air

There are no direct flights to Lucerne and hence you have to travel to either Zurich or Berne instead. You can travel to Lucerne once you reach either of these airports, either by rail or by road. Lucerne is approximately 55 kms from Zurich and it takes an hour to reach here by road. Another option is to travel to Geneva and travel to Lucerne from there. Geneva is around 90kms away from Lucerne. You can hire cars to drive down to Lucerne from the Zurich airport. 

How to Reach By Car

If you are going to travel to Lucerne by road, you can be assured that you will have an unforgettable trip. There are some stunning views here, soaring mountains in the distance, cloudless skies as far as the eye can see and brilliant roads as well. If you are opting to self-drive, you can rent a car in Zurich. There are plenty of options that you will find in the Zurich airport itself. From Zurich, you will have to take the NH14 highway and from Berne, you will have to take the route 10. At the border, you will have to get a motorway toll sticker.

How to Reach By Bus

There are no intercity buses as there is a train system that connects the entire city. From outside Switzerland, there might be a few buses from southern France, Italy and Croatia but these are not frequent and reliable.

How to Reach By Rail

Switzerland’s train system is one of the most sophisticated systems and reaching Lucerne by train is the easiest way to reach the city. Lucerne’s main train station is in the centre of the city and there are domestic as well as international arrivals and departures from here. Trains come here ever hour from Berne, Zurich and Olten. There are also half-hourly trains from Zurich and some other Swiss cities. The best part about travelling to Lucerne by train is that you will be able to experience some stunning views and sceneries. It takes 50 minutes to an hour to travel from Zurich to Lucerne and a little more than an hour from cities such as Basel and Berne.

Getting around in Lucerne

When you are in a city as gorgeous as Lucerne, even getting around can be a fun activity and it’s probably one of the few places where the journey is as wonderful as the destination. Here are some of the ways in which you can get around in Lucerne. 

The region is divided into various zones and Lucerne is Zone 10. You can take a day pass for Zone 10 which will cost you CHF10. This pass will let you travel to all the various attractions of the city. Tickets can be purchased through a phone app or through cash and credit card. 

By Bus
Lucerne has a very good bus system to take you to different points in the city. Those who have Swiss Pass can travel for free. 

By Train
Lucerne has the Swiss Metro system which is quite reliable and cheap too. The Swiss Pass will give you travel discounts, so make sure you get it. 

By Foot

There’s a quay very close to the train station. There are lake cruises which take passengers to various parts of the lake, allowing them to explore it at leisure. The cruises are also known to take passengers on various exciting excursions to nearby points of interest.
