How to Reach malta

How to Reach By Air

Air travel is far by the most convenient way of travelling to Europe from different continents. It is the fastest as well as the most comfortable out of all modes of travel. When it comes to travelling to Malta by air, keep in mind that it has a single international airport - Malta International Airport (MLA), which is located in Luqa. It is the main international hub for Air Malta, which is the national carrier and a base hub for Ryanair. Flights fly from all over the world to Malta from most European countries and Mediterranean countries.

Other low-cost airlines that can take you to Malta include Easyjet, Jet2 and Wizzair. Travelers should take into account that with a budget airline, they have to pay for everything - extra luggage, meals on board, internet facilities and so on. These airlines can be quite convenient if you are travelling from another European country to Malta. However, for long distance travel, you need to go with one of the major international airlines like Lufthansa, Emirates, British Airways, Etihad Airways, Air India, Aeroflot, Turkish Airlines and many more. These are the best airlines if you are crossing the ocean.

If you are flying from India, keep in mind that there are no direct flights to Malta. However, all the above-mentioned airlines provide connecting flights from all the major cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and others. The shortest flight flies from New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and it takes about 12 hours to reach Malta, including a layover in Rome.

The 2 most important documents Indians need while travelling to Malta are a valid passport and a Schengen visa.

You will find buses outside the airport that will take you to the main hubs of different cities. However, do not use white airport taxis as they are very expensive.

How to Reach By Water

Malta is a collection of islands and is surrounded by clear waters. Thus, its not only possible to travel to Malta via water, but also recommended. However, there are no cruises that set sail from Indian ports. But there are ferries available from Pozzallo, Italy. So, if you are in Italy, planning to come to Malta, you have to take this 90-minute ride provided by Virtu Ferries.

How to Reach By Road

Commuting within Malta.

Air

Malta is a small island with a lone international airport. There are no other airports on the island, which means that no domestic air travel is available.

Bus

Malta’s extensive bus network is the best mode of public transportation. As there are no planes and trains, its network of buses is the most convenient way to get around, especially for tourists. Before 2011, British buses that date back to 1950s were what ran all over the country. Now, they have been replaced by modern fleets with digital plans. As Malta is a congested place, buses are generally late, and a bus journey can take more time than other methods of travelling.

Things to keep in mind while travelling in Malta buses -

  • Make sure that you wave to a bus or give some sign of signal to stop, just like you sometimes have to do in India.
  • Press the stop button whenever your stop is going to arrive. You can consult a digital plan with automated announcements that will tell you about your stop. Drivers sometimes skip a station or two for unknown reasons and that is why it is important to press the stop button if you want to get out.
  • Buy a bus pass if you are in Malta for more than a week.
  • You may also find some buses with Wi-Fi, so make good use of them as there are only 50 buses with this feature.

Apart from the public buses, there are open tour buses running on the island as well. They are a stunning way of seeing this magnificent island and you should definitely go for them.

Bicycle / Hiking

Cycling in the west of Malta and Gozo is a popular way of exploring the countryside areas of the islands, which is why you will easily find bike rentals all over. These rentals are quite inexpensive and are very flexible. However, you should stay away from congested cities as there are no separate lanes for cycles and motorists are not patient with people on cycles. Moreover, if you are going to Malta in the peak season, it is always better to book your cycle in advance or you will be disappointed. You should stick to the countryside while bicycling and enjoy the historical landscape.

Taxi

Malta does not have Uber. The white taxis are the only ones allowed to pick you up from the streets. However, they are very expensive. To get cheaper taxis, try using black cab taxis like Peppin Transport, Ecabs, Transfer Malta and others that you can book online. They are a great alternative for airport transfers or for generally exploring the island. You can also book taxi tours that will take you to Rabat, Mosta, Valletta, Mdina and Blue Grotto. These tours can last for 3-4 hours.

Car

Renting a car is Malta is very cheap and one of the best ways to see this fine country. Having your own ride makes it easier to plan your excursions according to your needs and explore the offbeat and unknown spots as well. It will be cheaper for you if you book your car beforehand. In case you cannot do so, don’t worry because there are car rentals available right at the airport as well. To rent these cars, you need to have your driver's license with you the entire time.

Ferry

Travelling by ferry is a big part of Malta's culture. You can travel within Malta or go island hopping as well. Several ferry services run between Malta and Gozo and to Comino. These are very regular and make for short rides. It takes about 15 minutes to reach Camino.
