How to reach Norway

How to Reach Norway by Air

Flying is the fastest way to reach Norway from India. Norway has around 98 airports, but the busiest one is Oslo Gardermoen Airport. It handles most international flights coming into Norway. From India, you can take a flight to Norway from all the major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. However, there are no direct flights between these two countries.

Most flights to Norway from India are routed through Europe while a few go through the Middle East. All flights have at least one stopover in between. Turkish Airlines, Air France, Qatar Airways, KLM, Aeroflot, Swiss Air and Finnair are some of the international airlines operating flights between these India and Norway.

The Gardermoen Airport is located around 45 km from the city centre. A local train is the most affordable option to reach the city and the journey takes 23-25 minutes. The local trains run at 20-minute intervals. The next pocket-friendly option is the bus which takes 45 minutes and runs every 20 minutes. A taxi is the most expensive option but offers better connectivity. The Flytoget Airport Express Train is probably the most convenient way to get into the city. There’s one every 10 minutes during daytime and accompanied children under 16 years can travel for free.

How to Reach Norway by Railways

Norway is surprisingly well-connected with its Scandinavian neighbours and most of Europe by rail. Oslo Central Station is the main rail hub that receives international trains. The Norwegian State Railways (NSB) runs international trains on a fairly regular basis. They connect Oslo to Stockholm, Helsingborg, Hamburg, Berlin, Copenhagen and Malmo.

Most of the train journeys into Norway are overnight journeys and almost all trains have comfortable sleeping compartments. The train routes in Norway are some of the most scenic ones in the world giving you spectacular views of the fjords, mountains and the Arctic Circle. If you’re travelling from Europe you can find some good discounts on train tickets.

To experience one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, fly to Denmark, Sweden or any European country from India. From there you can proceed to Oslo by train.

How to Reach Norway by Road

If you’d rather drive into Norway, you can do so from Finland, Sweden or Russia. The journey may be longer than a train ride but will be as spectacular. If you start from Sweden, you will have to take the E6 highway. It passes through Malmo, Helsingborg and Gothenburg before arriving in Norway through the Svinesund border crossing.

From Finland the E8 highway brings you into Norway through the Kilpisjärvi border crossing running through Turku, Vaasa and Oulu on the way. The other alternative by road is the bus. Copenhagen in Denmark and Gothenburg in Sweden have an hourly bus service to Norway. Ask around for good deals as there are many operators selling tickets at lower prices. The bus is the best way to reach Norway by road if you do not want the hassle of rental car.

How to Reach Norway by Sea

Norway’s sprawling coastline offers you the chance to get into Norway by boat, which is a journey full of stunning beauty. Most of the cruises operating in the vicinity call upon Norwegian ports and fjords around cities such as Ålesund, Bergen, Oslo, Stavanger and Trondheim. Alternately, there are regular ferry routes starting from Germany, Sweden and Denmark. Check for package deals and child discounts.
