How to Reach italy

By Air

Travelling by Air is the easiest and quickest way to reach Italy. When it comes to air travel, Rome is the main international gateway into the country, followed by Milan. The main airports in the country are Pisa Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa, Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino International Airport in Rome, Malpensa International Airport in Milan, Florence Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Florence, and Palermo International Airport in Sicily. All these airports welcome major international flights.

Along with Alitalia, which is the major international airline in Italy, you can reach Italy from India through 19 other airlines, including Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Air France, British Airways, Etihad and Air India Limited. It takes approximately 6 hours to reach Italy directly from Delhi or Mumbai, and you can catch a direct flight from any of the major cities in India.

A note to travellers: As of 1990, Indians have to apply for a Schengen visa to visit Italy instead of an Italian visa as the country signed the Schengen agreement, which means that it is now a passport-free area in Europe!

By Sea

Travelling by water is one of the most beautiful ways to reach a destination. There is only one luxury cruise – Silver Whisper - that begins its journey from Mumbai and ends in Civitavecchia, Rome. It takes about 18 days and during this time, you go through 9 ports and 5 countries. Travelling to Italy by boat is a once in a lifetime experience that allows you to explore many different cultures in a single journey!

By Road

It is impossible to reach Italy from India by road. However, if you are travelling from France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia, you’ll find that crossing the border is fairly straightforward and you can enter Italy without any custom checks. Entering Italy from Switzerland by road is much harder, though.

Commutation in Italy

Air
Italy is a huge country with over 100 cities. The most famous tourist destinations are Rome, Naples, Milan, Venice, Genoa, Bari, Pisa, Lake Como, Amalfi Coast, Capri and Italian Alps. If you prefer a quick and hassle-free journey, travelling by air is the most convenient and Meridiana and Blue Express are the major airlines for domestic flights. If you want a more luxurious vibe on your holiday, you can also charter planes to travel within Italy!

Train
One of the most popular travelling options for tourists is the railway system. Italy has an excellent train system that can get you from one city to another quickly. As most of the cities and towns are in close proximity to each other, travelling by train is quick, inexpensive and reliable. The main train companies in Italy are Trenitalia and Italo. You can check their schedule online on their websites and commute to other cities easily. There are different types of trains running in Italy, mainly high-speed trains, regional trains, intercity and international trains.

Ferry
Italy’s coastline is approximately 40,000 miles, with a number of lakes and islands, including an entire city on water – Venice. So, travelling by ferries and boats will be a part of your journey! Tirrenia, Caremar, Moby, Siremar and SNAV are the largest ferry companies in Italy. You can also travel from the mainland to the islands in private yachts. Booking in advance is not necessary, except during the summer season, which is the peak season for tourists.

Cycling/Hiking
Travelling in Italy by cycle or on foot is not possible as the country covers around 116,000 square miles. However, if you want to rent a cycle to travel in a single city, then you should definitely go for it as it can translate into being a memorable experience. The same goes for walking. Most tourist destinations have multiple attractions that are located very close to each other, so walking is another great way to bask in the rich and historical air of Italy.

Car
Renting a car in Italy is another popular way of travelling in the country, especially if you are in a group. It is an economical way of getting around, but only if you are with many people. You can stop anywhere and enjoy all this beautiful country has to offer.

Now that you are fully aware of how to get to Italy and move around the country, start booking your flight tickets to this magnificent country. Plan your itinerary based on your mode of travel, and you’ll have a wonderful, hassle-free trip!
