Kovalam Tourism

The village of Kovalam is mainly popular for its beautiful beaches. The low tidal waves and shallow waters of the sea-beaches make it especially attractive to Western tourists that flock here. Revered as one of the most pristine beaches of India, this place has clear blue waters and white sandy beaches. This spot was especially risen to popularity in the early 1970s when a huge mass of ‘hippies’ came to this place. But the village of Kovalam has been included in the map of places of tourist attraction in India from the 1930s onwards and is one of the oldest holiday destinations within the country.

The hippie emigration to this village started its transformation from a simple fishing town to a great tourist hot-spot. It was Her Royal Highness Maharani Sethu Laxmi Bai, the queen of Travancore who first made this beautiful beach destination open to the public. Her Highness herself couldn’t resist Kovalam’s pure natural beauty and decided to build a palace near the beach at the top of a rock. This palace is her personal residence which is called Haylon castle. In 1936, Queen HH Karthika arrived in this palace to spend her honeymoon days with her newly-wed husband First Prince GV Raja. It was Prince GV Raja who understood the immense potential of this destination as a major tourist spot and endeavored in promoting it as a holiday spot. He invited the well-known Thomas group and Sons to this village to further develop it.
