How to Reach Madhya Pradesh by Air

Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is located around 8 km away from Indore. It is the busiest airport in central India and services most of the travellers flying into Madhya Pradesh. The airport was set up by the erstwhile Holkar administration in 1935. It received an international designation in May 2019.

Domestic airlines such as Vistara, Air Asia India, Air India, Alliance Air, Deccan Charters, IndiGo, Star Air and Trujet have regular flights servicing Madhya Pradesh. The airport enjoys good connectivity with following cities around India: Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. It also services Air India’s international flight to and from Dubai.

Once you land, you can hire a taxi to take you into the city. If Indore is not on your travel list, you can directly go to Indore Bus Stand (13 km) or Indore Railway station (11 km) to continue on to your ultimate destination. There are taxis and private buses available from the airport to take you to the bus stand or railway station.

  • Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj International Airport
  • Gwalior’s Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Air Terminal
  • Jabalpur’s Dumna Airport
  • Khajuraho’s Civil Aerodrome

How to Commute within Madhya Pradesh

By Bus
The Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (MPSRTC) is the state-run bus service that covers the entire state. With a choice between Super Volvo, Super Fast, Express, AC, Non-AC and Deluxe, there is a bus ticket for every pocket. Along with a superior-frequency over railways, buses offer better point-to-point connectivity.

By Taxi
Taxis offer you a better option if you’re going sight-seeing. Engage a taxi for the full day and go around at your own pace. Though taxis also run between cities, the long distances between some make it an expensive choice. Within cities like Indore, Ujjain and Gwalior you can find radio taxis as well as cab aggregators.

By Car
You can take your car around for explorations with guidance from your smartphone’s navigation service. The locals will also help you if you ask your way around. Even though your own car is highly convenient, parking might be an issue, especially in the crowded parts of cities. But you can always park your car at your hotel and use the city’s local transport systems to get around.

By Autorickshaws
You will find autorickshaws in almost every major city in Madhya Pradesh. They make for a quick way to get around. The ones on the bigger cities are now equipped with digital meters. But not all of them charge you by the meter. So, you’ll have to confirm before getting in. Be ready to haggle for fare wherever they don’t use the meter.
