How To Reach Mussoorie

How to Reach Mussoorie by Air

Usually, air travel is the fastest way to get to any destination. But this may not be the case with Mussoorie, at least not from most origin points. In keeping with its character, Mussoorie does not have its own airport. It is serviced by Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport. Located around 60 km from the hill station, you can hire a taxi to complete the final leg of your journey.

If you don’t mind a longer travel time, you can travel like the locals by Uttarakhand State Road Corporation’s buses. You can get one from Airport Gate. The surfaced roads are well-maintained and mostly in good condition. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is the nearest international airport to Mussoorie. If you’re flying in from outside, you can catch a connecting flight to the Jolly Grant Airport.

The airport itself is well-equipped with most modern amenities like lounges, Wi-Fi, restaurants and hotels. You can spend a day in Dehradun before proceeding to your ultimate destination. There are a number of flights which fly to Dehradun from major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Chennai. You can either choose a direct flight or one with stops in between. Flying time ranges between 50 minutes to 20 hours depending on your choice of flight. So, you have many options if you want to fly to Mussoorie.

How to Reach Mussoorie by Railways

Like its airport, Dehradun also shares its railway station with Mussoorie. Just 35 km away from Mussoorie, the Dehradun Railway Station will welcome you from all corners of the country. Delhi is the biggest connectivity hub if you’re travelling to Mussoorie by train. While Delhi has direct trains running to Mussoorie, the other major cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai have no direct rail connectivity.

Interesting fact, Dehradun is the last railway station on the Northern Line of the Northern Railway network. It was built around the year 1899 by the Britishers. After reaching Dehradun Railway Station, the rest of the journey has to be completed by road. A direct taxi will take the least time but will cost more than taking a bus. The bus will get you there at a significantly lower fare.

How to Reach Mussoorie by Road

The road seems to be the best way to reach Mussoorie. All the other means of travel ultimately end up on the road. There are 3 ways to reach your destination by road:

  • Hire a taxi
  • Take one of the local buses
  • Drive yourself

With the journey being as beautiful as the destination itself, a road trip to Mussoorie is a great temptation. The drive is full of stunning sights. The sight of tall majestic mountains framing the sky in the distance is not a sight you’re likely to forget soon. The winding mountainous roads will challenge you, as if they’re testing your resolve to continue onwards with the journey.

Alternately, you can hire a taxi from Delhi, Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Rishikesh. You can easily get onto one of the Uttarakhand State Transport Corporation or private buses from ISBT Kashmiri Gate in Delhi. The distance of around 290 km is covered in 9 - 10 hours. You can be quicker in a car, with the same journey taking around 8 - 9 hours to complete. Either way, your road trip to Mussoorie will be a memorable one.

How to Commute Within Mussoorie

By Rickshaw
The cycle rickshaws of Mussoorie, a relic of the days past, are still the biggest means of transport for short distances. It is an easy choice if you’re not going very far and are tired of walking. It also gives you a chance to explore the town at a leisurely pace. However, be prepared to bargain as the rickshaw pullers quote up to Rs 75 for a 4 km journey.

By Taxi
A taxi is your best option if you have to travel far in your explorations. Hiring a taxi for a day is an affordable option to single journeys. It is also highly convenient as you do not have to go searching for a taxi when you need it. The rates vary according to the season and there is no room for bargaining as all taxis operate under a union.

By Car
If you enjoy driving, you can drive yourself around Mussoorie. If you’ve not taken your car along, you can easily rent one for the day. Though it is costlier than hiring a taxi, you can maintain your own pace as you take in the delights of this quaint hill station. Car rentals vary by season and fluctuate according to availability.

By Bus
There is a single bus route that covers the entire town. This is best left for locals as the frequency is not great and you will simply end up wasting time.
