How to Reach Sydney By Road

Since Sydney is a part of Australia which is an island continent, it’s not possible to travel there by road from other countries. Sydney is connected to other cities in Australia by road and there are excellent road trip opportunities. There are options to rent cars, vans and motorhomes although do remember that Australia is a huge country and most cities are quite far from each other. In fact, the journey time from Sydney to Melbourne is 9 hours and to Perth, it’s 41 hours! However, do bear in mind that if you’re travelling around Sydney by road, make sure you’re insured. A four-wheel drive is your best option to travel along the highways.

How to Reach Sydney By Air

Travelling by flight is one of the best ways to reach Sydney from India. Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport is the busiest airports in Australia and is also said to be one of the oldest commercial airports in the world. It is connected to all the major cities in the world with flights operating regularly. From India too, there are various flights from all the major cities to Sydney. The flying time from New Delhi to Sydney is 13 hours 27 minutes and the only non-stop flight from New Delhi to Sydney is with Air India, which offers five flights in a week. There are numerous connecting flights from various other carriers too such as Thai, Cathay and Australia’s own Qantas Airlines. Do note that there can be some delays if the weather is unsuitable. The Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport is located in Southern Sydney on Botany Bay.

How to Reach Sydney By Sea

Travelling to Sydney by sea is not a viable option as there are no direct cruises that take you there from India. However, if you are coming from other countries such as New Zealand or the Pacific Islands, then you can book a cruise to Sydney.

How to Reach Sydney By Rail

There are no trains to Sydney from other countries but within Australia, it is possible to travel to Sydney from other cities such as Melbourne, Canberra or Brisbane. There are long distance commuter trains that link Sydney with other cities and are economical as well. Travelling between Sydney and Perth can be accomplished by the Indian Pacific train which is a luxury train that takes four days to complete the journey. While it’s certainly quite costly, it includes meals, excursions and other activities and is a once in a lifetime experience for many people.

By Car or Taxi

Travelling within Sydney can be a bit of a hassle as the traffic can be quite severe on almost all days. But if you’re planning to do a bit of sightseeing, then driving can make things quite easy if you’re hiring a car or getting a taxi. Also, if you are travelling around the city during the later hours of the day, it can be the only way to reach your hotel as public transport services shut down late in the day. Meter charges are different during the night and day so be prepared to pay more if you are out late.

Sydney has light rails that run between specific points in the city. You can use the light rails to travel between these points as they are fast and convenient.

By Ferries

Travelling by ferry can be fun and awe-inspiring as well, and Sydney ferries are no different. Taking you on a splendid journey across the city, the ferries are one of the best ways to see the various sights. As you sit on the ferry deck and watch the world glide past, you will be amazed if you take a ferry later in the day as the entire city lights up beautifully. There are various ferries with different routes and you can either choose the harbour ferries, the JetCats or the RiverCats. Whichever you choose, travelling by ferry to explore Sydney is absolutely memorable.

By Monorail

Sydney’s monorails are fun and exciting and are often used by tourists rather than a serious means of transportation. The connectivity isn’t extensive, and the monorail runs on a 12 minute loop from the Town Hall to Darling Harbour.

By Train

Sydney has a well developed network of suburban rails that connect various parts of the city together. CityRail is the underground railway system and its stations are spread across the city. Travelling to various city attractions is made easy thanks to the widely networked train systems. All the rail lines are linked to the City Circle either directly or indirectly and can be used to access the numerous places in the city that are worth seeing.

By Bus

Sydney’s bus network is quite extensive and covers most of the city. Travelling by bus makes it easy to visit the main attractions, the shopping points, sights like Sydney Opera House and the many wonderful restaurants. Sydney has two bus terminals which are close to each other so you can change buses based on where you need to travel. If you are looking to explore the city’s beaches, then do check out the Bondi Explorer which takes you to the famed Bondi Beach and Paddington. For other sights and attractions, the Red Sydney Explorer Buses are perfect as they take you to as many as 27 major attractions of the city including the Opera House.

By Air

Domestic flights from Sydney are aplenty if you want to travel to other cities nearby. There are various domestic airlines that cater to travellers who wish to travel to and from Sydney.
