Highlights of Thailand

Monuments of Thailand

Thailand has a rich cultural heritage and that can be amply seen through the numerous monuments that are spread all through the country. Many of the famous landmarks are known all through the world, but as you walk about you will also spot smaller, lesser-known, but just as beautiful structures that have stood the ravages of time. When in Thailand, you must include Prasat Hin Phimai, one of the oldest temple structures, in your itinerary. Military history talks about the Bridge over River Kwai, and you can take a train or walk across this tragic reminder of the cost of war. The White Temple, James Bond Island, Sukhotai Historical Park and Temple of Dawn are all landmarks that will showcase the beauty of Thailand and let you know why it attracts tourists every year. Be careful about your attire when you visit religious places. Cover your shoulders and legs as it is considered inauspicious.

Natural beauty of Thailand

About 25% of Thailand is covered with natural forests such as monsoon and rainforests. These are mostly made of hardwood trees. Throughout the country, you will come across bamboo and coconut palms as well. Thailand has done an excellent job preserving its natural landscape, and there are numerous national parks throughout. You can trek through the forests, a few of which offer opportunities to climb high peaks, or bathe under beautiful waterfalls, or even get a glimpse of a dolphin. If you wish, you can head out to the coast and just laze by the beach with a book in your hand. Thailand also has several water sports, and if you are an adrenaline junkie, do check out some of the sports like snorkelling, diving and surfing while in Thialand.

Wildlife of Thailand

Thailand might be a small nation but it is home to more than 10% of all of the world’s animals. This tropical nation has an explosion of land animals that include tigers, leopards, elephants, Malaysian sun bears, deer, sambars, otters as well as a host of primate species like gibbons and macaques. Bird watchers will rejoice in Thailand. The air in Thailand too is filled with birds of various colours and hues, including birds of prey such as the crested serpent eagle and the crested honey-buzzard. Reptiles and snakes abound in this tropical paradise too. But don’t worry, you are unlikely to spot one unless you go looking for them. Wildlife photography enthusiasts will have a field day capturing these amazing creatures.

Cuisine of Thailand

Thai cuisine is world famous today and has tantalised the taste buds of people in all corners of the world with its explosion of exotic flavours and fragrances. When in Thailand, you must stop for a piece of juicy grilled pork on a stick or slurp on a potent Tom Yum soup. Do crunch on the green papaya salad and enjoy a plate of Pad Thai (fried noodles). A plate of fried rice and Thai curry is the perfect way to end a tiring day spent touristing around. History of Thailand

There is plenty of evidence to indicate that Thailand had human settlements from 20,000 years ago. Copper, bronze and iron productions have been found in certain sites to show that these were well-established civilizations with a strong cultural background.

The first settlers in Thailand were the Thai ethnic group, who find a mention in Chinese chronicles from 6th century BCE. Thailand has had several kingdoms, some of which are Khmer and Pagan, who later gave way to the Sukhothai kingdom which is recognised as the first Thai kingdom by mainstream Thai history. Several more kingdoms, battles and accessions later, it was Rama 1 who first consolidated the lands to form Thailand as we know it today. The world wars and the cold war brought about economic hardships, which were overcome after the wars ended. It was only in 1988, after much internal instability and unrest that Thailand got its first elected prime minister. Today the country shows considerable economic power and is counted among the regional powers of South East Asia.
