How To Reach Udaipur

How to Reach Udaipur by Air

The Maharana Pratap Airport, Udaipur’s domestic airport is around 20 kms away from the city centre and is connected to many of the major cities in India such as Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai to name a few. Reaching by air is convenient and easy, although if you are travelling from outside India, then the nearest international airport is in Jaipur. However, you will not find direct flights to Jaipur from most destinations, so the better option would be to travel to either Mumbai or Delhi and then fly to Udaipur from there. However, the Jaipur International Airport does connect some international destinations such as Muscat, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Dubai

Airlines such as Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet fly to Udaipur regularly, even offering daily flights. From the airport, you can get a cab or taxi to reach the city. There are pre-paid taxis available and they typically cost a little less than Rs. 500.

How to Reach Udaipur by Road

The NH 8 highway connects Udaipur to Delhi and Mumbai and many people drive down to the city because the journey is quite picturesque. It is around 10 to 11 hours long and the distance between Udaipur and Mumbai or Delhi is approximately 700kms. The weather is most often pleasant and road trips can turn out to be quite the fun experience if you’re travelling with family. It’s easy enough to navigate the routes using Google Maps and the journey is quite smooth. What’s also helpful is that there are numerous places to stop and eat along the way, so the journey never gets tiresome. An airconditioned SUV is the best option to go on a drive to Udaipur.

While people can drive their own vehicles, they can also hire cars for the journey or even a car with accompanying driver. Udaipur is connected with four and six-lane highways and this makes it easy for people to choose to drive to the city. Hiring cabs can turn out to be an expensive affair based on the season as fares can go up during peak season. Availability is also affected based on this. So, do look up online or ask around before choosing a cab service to take you to Udaipur.

How to Reach Udaipur by Railways

Udaipur is connected by rail to a number of cities in India such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Indore and Jaipur by train. The railway station is in the city and is just 2.5kms southeast of the City Palace. It’s also very close from the main bus stand. Another delightful way to travel by train is to take the Palace on Wheels which also stops in Udaipur.

How to Commute Within Udaipur

By Autorickshaw
The easiest way to get around in Udaipur is by taking an autorickshaw. However, do note that these are not metered and you have to discuss the fare before you begin the trip. Most fares range between Rs. 50 to Rs. 100. There’s a bit of haggling involved before you can get a fare that seems reasonable. Tourists are easy bait so it’s always best to put on your best haggling hat and ask for reasonable fares. If you want to hire a local autorickshaw to take you sightseeing for the entire day, then it can cost anywhere between Rs. 400 to Rs. 500. Also, do remember to take everything your auto driver tells you with a pinch of salt, especially when it comes to recommendations as they get commission for everything.

By Taxi/Cabs
If you want to go sightseeing in the city, ask your hotel and they can most likely organise a taxi or a car for you to take you around the city or even nearby cities. There are also taxis available to get around the city too but once again, you will have to negotiate for reasonable fares. If you are hiring a taxi to a nearby town like Kumbalgarh, it will cost anything around Rs. 3000.

By Bicycle
Fitness enthusiasts will enjoy going around the city on bicycles which can be rented on a daily basis. However, do be mindful of traffic as it can be quite tiring.  There are numerous places where you can rent cycles and use them to enjoy sightseeing around the city on your own.

By Foot
If you want to explore the old city, it’s a good idea to simply go on foot. You’ll get to see a lot more and you’ll also enjoy the many different facets of the city. The roads are also narrow and congested and the traffic is slow moving. Thus, it makes sense if you want to walk around and see the city on your own.
