\u00a0Barren mountains, glacial-blue lakes, monasteries older than memory, and an altitude that humbles you before it amazes you.<\/em><\/p>\n

I nearly cancelled twice before we even left Kolkata.<\/p>\n

Altitude sickness stories online had properly spooked me, the kind of forum posts where someone describes their head “feeling like a balloon” at twelve thousand feet, and I’d convinced myself I’d be the one person it happened to.<\/p>\n

Eight days, a fair amount of altitude, and not one of them dull. That’s the short version.<\/p>\n

We’d looked at a couple of other Ladakh tour packages<\/a> before settling on this one, mostly because the Ladakh itinerary didn’t try to cram every attraction into the first three days, which, in hindsight, was the right call. Here’s the rest of it.<\/p>\n

A Warm Welcome to Leh<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The descent into Leh<\/a> is unlike any other landing I’ve had. The plane dips between mountains that look almost bare of anything living, rust-coloured ridges with the odd streak of snow, and my ears popped twice before the wheels even touched the runway. Walking from the aircraft to the terminal, maybe eighty metres, I was properly out of breath. Nobody warns you that just carrying your own bag at that altitude feels like a mild workout.<\/p>\n

At the hotel, we were welcomed with khatas, white ceremonial scarves placed around our necks by a young woman who said “julley” with a warmth that instantly put me at ease.<\/p>\n

Julley, we learned fast, covers hello, thank you, and most other pleasantries in Ladakhi culture, which is handy when you’re too breathless to manage a full sentence. Our Thomas Cook tour manager, Tenzin, met us in the lobby and was blunt about the first rule of Ladakh. “Today, no walking fast, no hot water bath, just rest.<\/em>” We mostly obeyed, after a short and slightly embarrassing detour to the window to stare at the mountains.<\/p>\n

The room itself smelled faintly of some local herb burning somewhere nearby, juniper, I think, which apparently locals believe helps with the thin air. Whether it actually does anything or not, I couldn’t tell you, but it made the whole evening feel oddly ceremonial. We were in bed by nine, which never happens on holiday, and slept properly for the first time in weeks.<\/p>\n

Discovering Leh’s Iconic Attractions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Day two moved slower than the Ladakh itinerary suggested, and I was glad of it. Here’s roughly how the day went:<\/p>\n

What changed my mind was a colleague who’d done the trip the previous September and just said, flatly, “You’ll manage, everyone manages, just don’t rush it.”<\/em> Not exactly a poetic endorsement, but it worked better than any brochure for Ladakh sightseeing would have. We booked the Magical Ladakh package with Thomas Cook<\/a> a week later, four of us, none of us quite sure what to expect with the list of best places to visit in Ladakh. Here’s what I found.<\/p>\n
