Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Dwarka Guide: Timings, Darshan & Gujarat Shiva Circuit<\/b><\/p>\n

If Gujarat\u2019s temple trail is on your mind, <\/span>Nageshwar Jyotirlinga<\/span> near Dwarka is worth slotting into your plans. Known simply as Nageshwar, or the Lord of Serpents, this Shiva shrine has long held its place among the 12 Jyotirlingas. The first thing that catches your eye is the 80+-ft seated Shiva statue towering over the complex. It is hard to miss the road that leads to Bet Dwarka.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Nageshwar Jyotirling Temple <\/span>also draws heavy footfall during Shravan, when Shiva devotees turn up for special prayers and abhishek. The Legend of Daruka, Darukavana, and Supriya<\/b><\/p>\n

The <\/span>story of Nageshwar Jyotirlinga<\/span> is quite interesting. Legend has it that there was a demon called Daruka and his band of followers in the forest of Darukavana who made life miserable for people there. They disturbed prayers and created havoc. One of those they captured was a Shiva devotee called Supriya.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even while locked up, Supriya kept praying to Shiva and got the other prisoners to chant his name too. Their devotion is said to have summoned Lord Shiva himself, who took on Daruka and freed the captives.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the devotees\u2019 request, Shiva stayed back at the spot in the form of a Jyotirlinga called Nageshwar. That\u2019s how the temple got tied to Darukavana, and why the <\/span>Nageshwar Jyotirlinga location<\/span> is seen as a place where Shiva steps in to protect his followers from danger.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nageshwar vs Aundha Nagnath: Which Is the \u201cReal\u201d Nageshwar Jyotirlinga?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

This part of the Jyotirlinga tradition can get a bit complicated. The <\/span>Nageshwar Jyotirlinga<\/span> near Dwarka in Gujarat and Aundha Nagnath in Maharashtra both claim the Nagesh\/Nagnath Jyotirlinga tag. Aundha Nagnath has the Maharashtra government\u2019s official recognition as one of the 12, while the Dwarka shrine is pitched by <\/span>Gujarat tourism<\/span><\/a> as the <\/span>Nageshwar Jyotirling<\/span>a. So which one\u2019s the original? Truth is, there\u2019s no clear-cut historical answer!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Shiva Purana mentions Darukavana, but nobody can say for sure where that forest actually was. Traditional readings have linked the name to more than one location. A scholarly work on the Jyotirlinga tradition points out that both the <\/span>Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Dwarka<\/span> and Aundha Nagnath are serious contenders for the Nageshwar identity.
