He was a tyrant who seized the throne by imprisoning his own father. On the day of his sister’s (Devaki’s) wedding to Vasudeva, he heard a prophecy from the heavens. It said that the cause of Kansa’s death would be Devaki’s eighth son. The seventh child, Balarama, was miraculously transferred to Rohini’s womb. When Devaki was pregnant with her eighth child, a thunderous storm came down. Then Devaki and Vasudeva heard the voice of Lord Vishnu, who gave them instructions to save the child.

At midnight, the eighth child, Shri Krishna, was born in the prison cell. He crossed the River Yamuna to reach Nanda and Yashoda’s house in Gokul.
