In this city of Le Corbusier, you will find several of his trademarks scattered around. One of his epic trademarks was the Open Hand symbol. For the Swiss architect, it was a sign of peace and reconciliation. For him, it signifies the give and take of ideas. Chandigarh has the largest of Le Corbusier's many Open Hand sculptures. Situated in the Capitol Complex in Sector 1 in Chandigarh, this monument stands 26 meters high. It was designed in such a way so that it will move in the direction of the wind.


One of the popular attractions of this city is the Martyr’s Memorial. This famous monument was created to honor the martyr’s of the Punjab partition. Within the enclosure of this monument, there are symbolic figures of a prone man, a lion, a snake, that are set amid the ruins. 


Chandigarh is an ideal vacationing location for you and your family. The Rock Garden is in itself a piece of marvel. Once you get inside the garden, you will find yourself surrounded by several sculptures of different shapes and sizes. There is also a manmade waterfall surrounded by several structures made up of earthen pots.

This is located 8 Kilometers away from the city. The temple is dedicated to Mata Mansa. According to Hindu Mythology, the head of Devi Sati was dropped over there and it was from then that the temple was named after her. During Navratri, fairs take place in the surrounding areas.


This state museum is located in the Sector 10 of the city. The building is designed by the famous architect Le Corbusier The building has an impressive collection of fine artwork by several international as well as local artists. You will also find the local traditional art of phulkari which is very popular in the northern region of the country. This museum can be visited on all days of the week except Mondays.


Among several other achievements, Chandigarh is famous for having Asia’s largest rose garden. The Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is a botanical garden which is spread across 30 acres of land in the Sector 16 of the city. Named after an erstwhile President of India, Shri Zakir Hussain, this garden was created in 1967 under the guidance of Dr. M.S. Randhawa, Chandigarh's first chief commissioner.

Here, some 50,000 rose bushes of around 1600 different species of the plant can be found. Not only just roses but several other species of plants are also found over here. During February or March, there is an annual rose festival organized here, known as Festival of Gardens. This event includes display of several kinds of roses and contests like photography, bonsai, beauty pageants, landscaping, etc. There is always an elaborate arrangement of foods and drinks for the visitors.


This is a very precious gift from Le Corbusier and the Chief Engineer P.L. Verma to the city of Chandigarh. It is an integral part of the lines of the people of this city who find their share of respite here. It is a rain-fed artificial lake covering around 3 square kilometers of area.

It has a sanctuary where several migratory birds nest during the winter months. Some of the guest birds are cranes, storks and Siberian Ducks. This lake has been declared as a protected wetland. The bank of this lake is a popular spot for the people to stroll and enjoy the sunrise and sunset at the lake. It is also a popular venue for several events like Mango Festival, etc.


The city of Chandigarh is located at the foothills of the Shivalik Mountain Range of the Himalayas. It has a subtropical climate and as a result of which you will get to see great seasonal variations. The summers are very hot with a daily average high temperature of 46-degree centigrade. The winters are also cool and dry because of the cool winds flowing from the Himalayas. Spread over forty acres of land, this garden is dedicated to the work of an amateur sculpture, Nek Chand. In spare time he prefers collecting waste items like broken ceramics, bangles, earthenware, bottles, rags, etc. He would then make amazing sculptures out of these thrown wastes.

He began establishing these sculptures in a forest buffer area around the Sukhna Lake. It was completely illegal to construct anything in that region and that is why, on being found, the authorities decided to demolish the creations. However, with the public support, Nek Chand Saini was able to save his sculptures and even got the support from the authorities to further develop it. The most notable sections of this garden are the manmade waterfall and the area depicting several women dancers and the sculptures of animals. Open throughout the year, you just need tp pay a small amount for entering this unique masterpiece

While a boat ride at Sukhna Lake is a bit adventurous, however, for those who are not satisfied with this, they can hire a cab and go around a few places situated at some distance from this city.

For the residents of Chandigarh, Sukhna Lake spells out relaxation and family time. It is a very popular picnic spot. Here families comes along with their kids to spend some time together. In the winter months, there is an option for foot paddled boats on which you can explore some parts of the lake.

Apart from this, Chandigarh is a city of several gardens. The Garden of Fragrance is quite famous for its varieties of jasmine and damask rose.

One of the stalwarts of this city is the Gazal situated in the Sector 17 market. Here, they serve traditional Mughal cuisine along with several dishes belonging to other cuisines like Continental and Chinese.

There may not be several options for live music in the nightlife options of this city. However, from time to time Orchid Lounge arranges live performances of local bands. It is located in Sector 34. Cloud 9 also conducts live band performances.


The Voodoo is a small place but it has a dance floor and a well-stocked bar. It is famous for its BMW’s which is Baileys, Malibu and Whiskeys. A bit premium priced, it is a hot spot for the young residents of the city.


For an exquisite collection of wines, Zinc Lounge is quite famous amongst the high class section of the society. Score!! is a popular sports bar which has large LED displays featuring the current sports matches to go along and array of beverage menu comprising choice of beers.  

Shopping in chandigarh


There is a famous flea market in Sector 22 of this city. Here, in an open area, there are several stalls which sell clothes, junk jewelry, beauty accessories, shoes and various types of handicrafts. This is a favorite shopping destination for the college goers of the city. A little bit of bargaining can help you get a good deal on the items purchased. Make sure to buy jootis, i.e. traditional footwear available for both ladies as well as gents.


There are several stores which offer multiple brands under a single roof. Ebony is one such departmental store which has its presence all over the northern region of the country. Here, they offer and sell goods of several domestic as well as international brands.

At Khadi India, you will find out Indian domestic goods which have been manufactured out of produce grown under sustainable agricultural practices. Similarly, Phulkari is the emporium selling items from a cottage industry of Punjab. Visit Fabindia for exclusive cotton garments and other varieties of herbal products.    


The entire city is divided into a series of sectors. And each of these sectors has their own marketplaces. However, the Sector 17 market is quite famous as a shopping complex and for its restaurants. Here, you will find a series of stores selling designer boutique items that range from Music CD’s, Electronic items, shoes to accessories.
