Among several other achievements, Chandigarh is famous for having Asia’s largest rose garden. The Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is a botanical garden which is spread across 30 acres of land in the Sector 16 of the city. Named after an erstwhile President of India, Shri Zakir Hussain, this garden was created in 1967 under the guidance of Dr. M.S. Randhawa, Chandigarh's first chief commissioner.
Here, some 50,000 rose bushes of around 1600 different species of the plant can be found. Not only just roses but several other species of plants are also found over here. During February or March, there is an annual rose festival organized here, known as Festival of Gardens. This event includes display of several kinds of roses and contests like photography, bonsai, beauty pageants, landscaping, etc. There is always an elaborate arrangement of foods and drinks for the visitors.
