Built in the early 1900s, the dam is built across the flowing River Hemavathy. Known to form the Hemavathi Reservoir, the dam is close to the birthplace of GorurRamaswamyIyengar – a Kannada literature genius. 

Built from Chloritcschist or popularly known as soapstine, the temple is located in Nuggehalli or Nuggupalli in the Tiptur-Channarayanapatna state highway. Constructed by Bommanna Dandanayaka during the Hoysala Period, the temple features three towers or trukuta which is intricately carved on the exteriors. The prayer hall of the temple and the main hall features a closed mantapa which has nine bays and three shrines, That is not all! The temple’s main attraction is the standing statue of Hindu Goddess Parvati.  

Another masterpiece which is located to the Lakshmi Narasimha temple, is the ekekuta architectural styled Sadasiva Temple. One of the popular pilgrimage sites in the region, the temple is known for tits enormously-sized ‘Linga’. The templesanctorum also features an intricately carved ‘Nandi’bull statue and a couple of statues of Hindu Lord Ganesha. 

The town of Ramanathpur, located on the banks of River Cauvery houses a number of temples which are considered a ‘must-visit’ destinations in Hassan. While checking the temples, make sure that you have a binocular to view the many migratory birds during the migration season. 

Known for its Gothic-style of architecture, the church is around 450 years old. What makes it an interesting is the fact that the church is submerged during the monsoon and winter season by the River Hemavathy. But during the month of summer, the water recedes and tourists can explore the church premises.  

Drive across to the temple with a giant statue of Lord Hanuman. Though a not so popular destination, the temple does house good engravings which can be explored during a trip to Hassan. Also, the view from atop the hill offers a magnificent view of the town.

The sculptures of Nagna Kala Bhairava, Brahma-Saraswati, Mother and Child, wooden carvings and a bronze statue of a Tirthankara are among the important displays in the sculpture gallery. These master pieces represent Indian art at various exhibitions held at France, Japan and various other countries.

 

Located at Maharaja Park, the museum was established in 1977. It is a preserving site for local archaeological antiquities such as stone statues, paintings, weaponry and coins

Located in Sakleshpur Taluk, the forest reserve shares its border with the Pushpagiri Wildlife Santuary and the Kukke Subramanya Forest Range. The thick forest reserve is known for being home to the Indian cobras. That is not all! A ride across the forest also allows the tourists to spot a Sambar deer or a brown fox in the region. The reserve also plays host to innumerable migratory birds attracting bird watching lovers from across the country. 

The town is located on the banks of river Yagachi, approximately 38 kilometresfrom Hassan and it is a very well-known tourist destination in the state. Belur was the former capital of the Hoysalas and referred to as Velapur, Velur and Belahur. Belur is famous for the Chennakeshava Temple, considered one of the best examples of Hoysala workmanship. The holy place was built by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana who built it to show his achievements in 1116 AD after his victory against the Cholas.

Another temple town, Halebidu is a few kilometres in Hassan. The town is known for housing few of the best Hoysala styled temples such as the Hoysalaeswara Temple – famous for black stone carvings. The temple is considered an architectural gem considering the carvings in the wall are layered with the elephants lining up at the bottom level; above the elephants is the lions; above it is the mythological tales depiction from Ramayana and Mahabharata and the top layer consists of flower motifs. You will find almost all the Hindu deities in the walls of the temple. 

This temple village is a few kilometres down from the town of Hassan, This is a Jain pilgrimage site located at an altitude of approximately 3350 feet above sea level. Located in between the hills of Vindhyagiri and Chandragiri, tourists will be enchanted by the view of the Lord Gommateshware or Bahubali statue which is located on the Vindhyagiri hill. Carved out of a single block of rock, this is the largest monolithic stone statue in the world. Hundreds of hundreds pilgrims climb up the steps to pay homage to the Bahubali.

 

Chikmagalur is a quaint hill station situated at an altitude of 3,400 feet on the foothills of the Mullayanagiri range in Karnataka. Translated as ‘the land of younger daughter’, it is said to have been given as a dowry to the youngest daughter of Rukmangada, the legendary chief of Sakharayapattana.The hill is popular for its mountain ranges, green and verdant environment, favourable climate, coffee plantations, trekking and cascading waterfalls.

Air: The nearest airport is the Mangalore Airport 113 km away. From there a bus, taxi or car can be taken to Chikmagalur.

Train: The nearest station is located in Kadur 40 km away. From here a taxi can be hired to Chikmagalur

Road: There are regular bus services from Bangalore, Mangalore and Hubli. You can also arrive by car from Bangalore via Hassan or take a cab from Banaglore.

 

Places to Visit in Chikmagalur

1.Mullayanagiri

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak at 2,000 metres above sea level between the Himalayas and the Nilgiris and a major tourist attraction. It’s a favourite with trekkers as it has amazing challenging and scenic trails of lush grasslands making it a memorable trek.  A moderately challenging trek, it starts from Sarpadhari to Mullayanagiri and is 3 km long path with a 60-degree steep ascent with marvelous views of pristine verdant greenery, small streams and caves. Apart from trekking, it is also apt for mountain biking due to its perfect track.  The stunning hills are located 12 km from Chikmagalur and offer a mesmerizing panoramic view of the city. On top of the peak, there is a small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The best time to trek here is during the spring season as summers get too hot and during monsoons it is not advisable due to the risk factors involved.

2.Baba Budangiri

This is a prominent mountain range in Chikmagalur due to the shrine that was built for Sufi saint Hazrat Dada Hayat Khalandar. The shrine is visited by both Hindus and Muslims. Also, there are three exquisite caves with three siddhas buried here, making it a point of annual festival in the caves. The region has a spectacular scenery making it the most frequented attraction by tourists.

3.Hebbe Falls

Hebbe Falls is an enchanting luscious waterfall surrounded by dense green forests and vegetation. The waterfall torrents from a height of 550 feet and splits into two streams forming Dodda Hebbe (Big Falls) and Chikka Hebbe (Small Falls). To reach the fall, one has to undertake an 8km arduous trek from Kemmangundi. The sight of cascading water from the heights is an absolute riveting sight to behold.

4.Hirekolale Lake

Hirekolale Lake is a stunning man made lake 10 kms from Chikmagalur. The highlight of the lake is the sight of it during sunset as it shimmers in the vivid hues of saffron shade reflected by the radiance of the setting sun giving it an almost magical appearance. One of the popular attractions, it warrants a visit for it’s spectacular beauty.

5.Coffee Museum

Known for its coffee plantations, Chikmagalur has a dedicated coffee museum where the process of plucking the beans to drying and powdering is displayed for visitors to understand the process. The museum has a gallery with pictures and exhibits, a video presentation on the story of coffee and a laboratory demonstrating the grinding of coffee beans.
