Monuments in Meghalaya

Nartiang Monoliths – These exist throughout the Khasi and Jaintia Hills. However, the biggest collection of monoliths can be witnessed in the north of the Nartiang market.  These are usually flat stones erected in the upright position. The site has been declared of national importance in the year 1958. Monoliths are a symbol of remembrance in the Jaintia Hills. 

 

David Scott Monument - It is located at Cherapunji. Built in memory of David Scott. It is a huge brick structure that has inscriptions on it.

 

The Historical and Antiquarian Studies and Revision of District Gazetteers cell – This building is located at Brooke Side Complex, in Rilbong, Shillong. It basically takes care after the reprinting job of hundred years old important documents of the State. 

 

The State Central Library -  It is situated in the heart of the capital city, Shillong and has a collection of more than 1,50,000 books on various subjects.

Meghalaya has a history of rich craftsmanship, and wood-carving and artistic weaving are important crafts here, especially in the Jaintia and Khasi districts. You can shop for cane and bamboo handicrafts, wood carvings, jewellery as well as dolls, clay toys, and tiny musical instruments from the little souvenir shops in and around the state.
