This is the main attraction and the most important monument in this place. This place is important as this was Fort was home to Shivaji once upon a time. He ascended to the throne here in 1674 AD and he also died here in this very fort in the year 1680 AD. The fort is built upon a huge plateau which extends over 5 square kilometres. The unique design about this Fort is that it is inaccessible from three sides and only accessible through a narrow pathway on one side. This Fort was renovated and is now open to public for tourism. Inside this Fort there are a number of statues which pay tribute to the great Shivaji and his conquests. There are also paintings which are very exquisite and impressive. Situated right in the centre of this Fort is Shivaji’s throne which is still intact till this day. This Fort gives you an idea about the talent and architectural abilities of the Mughals.
Another popular tourist attraction, not very far from Raigad Fort, The Kolaba Fort is situated in the sea and is placed at a distance of about 1-2 kilometres from the shore. This place lays 35 Kms south of the city of Mumbai. This fort was formerly used as a military defence Fort. But later this place got renovated and is now open to tourists and visitors to take a tour around the fort and witness the wealth of this place. The Kolaba Fort is also sometimes known as Alibag Fort, so make sure that you don’t get confused with both the names.
