This beautiful palace is also known as the Puthen Palace. The palace was built by King Swati Thirunal, who had keen interest in music. The Palace is famous for its grand facade adorned with horses. The palace is the location of an Annual music festival named after King Swati Thirunal.


This is the current official residence of the Travancore Royal Family; built in the 15th century. Although the building cannot be accessed by the public, you may take a glimpse of the imposing palace built in Saxon architecture with hints of Travancore architecture. The resting place of the last King of Travancore, Maharaja Chitra Thirunal, called Panchavadi is close by, which is open for public.  


This palace used to be the old residence of the Travancore Royal Family and is famous for its grand and attractive architecture and interiors.  The Palace hold the world Guinness Record for being the largest wooden palace in the world. Made entirely of teak and rosewood, this awesome palace has granite floors which are supposed to have been treated with a rare herbal mix, which keeps the floor cold in summers and warm during the rain and cold weather. The palace houses some rare artefacts and antiques like a spice bed, sandalwood pillars and also the oldest clock tower in the South Asia. The palace is situated 65 kilometres away from Trivandrum in Kanyakumari, but is managed by the Government of Kerala. 


There are remnants of an old fort called Kottakakam around the Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple. Most of the ruins have been take down, however the eastern gate is still intact and opens just before the temple. The gate is decorated lavishly and is a sight in the evenings.There are several other monuments in and around the city which you may want to visit like the Attingal Palace and The Koyikkal Palace in Nedumangad. 


This temple is one of the most prominent religious attractions in the city. Located in the area called the East Fort in Trivandrum, this temple is dedicated to the Lord Vishnu. The temple has distinct Dravidian style of architecture and had been adorned with exquisite stone carvings and mural paintings. The deity of the temple Lord Vishnu is seen resting on Anantha, the serpent. It is one of the 108 most sacred temples in the country. The temple is also one the richest temples in the world, after the discovery of treasures in its cellars. There are other places of interest inside the temple like The Musical Pillars, Corridor with 500 Pillars, Gold Mandap and Padmatheertham, which is a large pristine pond inside the temple complex.


This illustrious temple of Lord Shiva was built in the 14th century and is frequented by thousands of pilgrims every year. The temple is famous for its intricate carvings and lovely architecture.The other religious places of tourist interest in and around Trivandrum are Kunnumpara Temple and Sri Adikesavaperumal Temple in Thiruvattar.



Trivandrum would be loved by the children. The place has so much to offer to the little ones. The Zoological Park in Trivandrum is the First Indian Zoo. It was opened in 1843 and is famous for being the home of the tiger who inspired the famous book and movie Life of Pi. The place has an exotic flora and fauna. The Priyadarshini Space Planetarium would give the children a reason to enjoy and learn about the space and various stars, galaxies and the solar system. Trivandrum is a delight for people interested in the history, culture and heritage of the state. There are quite a few museums of repute in Trivandrum. Ramanayar Palace Museum used to be a royal building near the doors of the Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple. It is now a famous museum with rare antiques and relics belonging to the Travencore Kings. 


The Napier Museum is another museum which is a beautiful building designed by a famous architect Robert Chisholm. The Museum has on display a valuable collection of artefacts from the various parts of the country and even overseas; from places like Bali and China.


Keralan Museum is also very popular and is a relatively new museum. It is the first interactive museum in the country with touchscreen terminals and modern interiors. There is a Sree Chithra Art Gallery in the museum complex for art lovers, which has on display some beautiful artwork from painters like Raja Ravi Varma and Nicholas Roerich. There also miniature paintings from Tanjore and other parts of Kerala. The Legislature Museum and Kerala Science & Technology Museum are other museums of repute in the city.



The most famous Garden in the city is Akkulam located on the banks of Akkulam Lake. This beautifully landscaped garden is equipped with a Boat Club for boating enthusiasts, a children’s park, a swimming pool and a new addition in the form of a musical fountain. Akkulam could be a great place to have a picnic or a fun filled evening with the family. The Napier Zoo is nestled amongst one of the most beautiful gardens in the city. The Lawns of the Kanaka Kunnu Palace are rather grand and you could add them to the itinerary. There is also a garden on the Shanghumukkam beach which would be of interest.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary, Aruvikkara Dam and The Neyyar Dam are some other remarkable places with loads of natural beauty.


Most the temples have performances of dance forms like Kathakali, Kuttiyattam and Mohiniyattam during festivals and could be watched to experience the culture of the Kerala.  Margi Theatre is a prominent institution which holds these performances in Trivandrum regularly. You may also enquire about dance and music shows which are organized by the Sangeetha Natak Academy. You should also enquire about performances of Kalarippayat done by CVN Kalari Sangham. Onam is celebrated with a lot of fanfare in September- October in Trivandrum, so Arattu at Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple. Other culturally important festivals celebrated in Trivandrum are Nishagandhi Dance and Music Festival, Attukal Pongala, Flower Show and Swathi Sangeethotsavam.


Trivandrum is a large city with dozens of famous landmarks. The Kerala Government Secretariat is a beautiful building, which also has a small museum inside the old Legislative Assembly Hall in its premises. Niyamasabha, the new legislative Assembly hall is also a famous building.


Indian Coffee House in Thampanoor is famous for its unique spiral shaped building and is a famous restaurant too. The Kerala Art College is another popular landmark in the city. 


The Public Library in Trivandrum is also a known landmark and is popular for its charming colonial architecture.

One can enjoy snorkelling at Kovalam Beach and indulge in Kayaking at Murukkumpuzha in Thiruvananthapuram. There are provisions of enjoying water sports like speed boating at the Veli Tourist Village near Veli Lake. Kovalam beach is also perfect for surfing.

Connemera Market is the best street market in Trivandrum. You will find items of daily need, essentials, fresh produce like vegetables, fish, meat and fruits here very easily and at reasonable prices. Sathamangalam, Kesavadasapuram and Nanthencode are other popular market areas.
