How to Reach Europe

How to Reach Europe by Air

Travelling to Europe by air is convenient and fast, especially as there are direct flights from cities in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai to several popular destinations such as London, Rome, Amsterdam and Paris. There are several connecting flights to other destinations such as Sweden and Denmark and these tend to be relatively more economical. While booking your flights to Europe, do bear in mind the high season which is summer, which can make your entire trip quite expensive as flights and hotels tend to be quite pricey at this time. It’s always a good idea to book in advance to avoid disappointment and to save money.

There are numerous well-known airlines that fly to Europe from India such as Air France, Emirates, Lufthansa, Swiss International Airlines, KLM and Air India to name a few. A direct flight can be anywhere between 8 to 12 hours, depending on your destination in Europe.

Here’s a list of some of the best airports in Europe, known for their convenience, comfort and luxury.

  • Munich International Airport in Germany is clean, easily navigable and has some really good facilities.
  • Zurich Kloten International Airport in Switzerland is very accessible from Zurich, has fantastic chocolate stores and excellent lounges and is considered one of the best in Europe.
  • London Heathrow Airport is probably the biggest airport in Europe and is efficient and convenient. Shopping, restaurants and the famed Terminal 5 set it apart from other airports.

How to Reach Europe by Road

With an extensive network of roads, travelling across Europe by road can be a viable option if you have the means to travel across different countries by car. Reaching Europe by road is not possible.

How to Reach Europe by Railways

Europe is best discovered by train and there are several international train services that can transport you from country to country. Trains are well connected and the best way to see the continent is by reaching it through air first

How to Reach Europe by Water

Travelling to Europe by sea is possible only if you’re travelling from the United States. There are freighter cruises where people can go on board cargo ships but this is not the best way to cross the Atlantic Ocean. There are several luxury cruises also available for those who want to enjoy their vacation right from the journey itself. Again, this is not possible from India.

Commuting Within Europe

There are several low-cost carriers such as Ryan Air and Easy Jet, using which you can hop across different countries in Europe. However, the important thing to remember is that while these tickets may come cheaply, they are not traveller-friendly as they often allow you only a single carry-on baggage and everything else is chargeable. If you’re unable to travel light, you will end up paying more. Sometimes, it makes sense to book a national carrier instead of a low-budget airline for this very reason. Also, do avoid booking at the last minute especially during summers as ticket prices will be exorbitant because even local Europeans end up travelling at this time within the region.

By Boat
Ferries can be a quick and comfortable way to travel within countries like Spain, France or Greece while there are yet others that operate across the ports of Finland, Sweden and Germany. Travelling between countries like Italy, Spain and Greece can be a fantastic experience as well. Do find out about discounted prices and it’s often possible to use your Eurail pass to travel on ferries too.

By Bus
Travelling by bus can be cheaper than travelling by train in Europe. However, it can also be quite a long and tedious journey. Europe has an organisation of international buses called Eurolines and passes are available for those who want to travel extensively. During high season, even buses can be expensive, so book in advance. There are also hop-on, hop-off services which stops at several major cities. Within various countries, buses are a cheaper option that trains for travelling, especially if you want to travel to remote locations. Checkout the things to do in Europe.

By Road
Travelling Europe by car can be great fun and a memorable experience certainly. There are various car rental companies that make it possible to travel between different countries as well. People also opt to hire campervans to travel across Europe and this can turn out to be cost-efficient if there are three or four people travelling together. Do bear in mind the differing fuel prices as well as insurance. Also, ensure if you have the right license to drive in Europe.

By Train
The Eurail is one of the best ways to travel within Europe. It connects 28 countries (although UK is not included) and the Eurail pass offers you the flexibility to travel through different cities in a single country or multiple countries within Europe. The pass is valid only for a certain number of months and there are a number of combinations and permutations that you can choose for your passes, based on the countries you want to visit.
Some of the best trains in Europe can be found in Germany, France and Switzerland. Trains can be a very convenient way to travel and see Europe and the scenic routes, making it worth the price. If you’re taking overnight trains, then do make it a point to keep your belongings safe by locking your compartment doors at night, ensuring there are others in your compartment and even chaining your luggage to the luggage rack. Thefts can happen anywhere and the last thing you want is to be stranded in Europe without your money or passport. There are also amazing Europe Tour Packages to choose from, here at Thomas Cook.
