About Paniyeli Poru:

Located on the banks of the River Paniyeli, the Paniyeli Poru waterfall is beautiful picnic area in the village of Paniyeli. It is a treat to watch the water cascading onto a bed of rocks. The entire area is surrounded by a beautiful forest, which adds to the scenic beauty of the area. You can even find elephant footsteps on the way to the waterfall, which will definitely heighten your sense of adventure as you walk to this popular picnic area.

Paniyeli Poru is the number one place to visit if you are in Kuruppampady. However, do keep in mind that a trip to the area ends up taking the whole day. As there are no hotels or lodging options available in the area, make sure that you have a plan in place for going back.

Timings : Paniyeli Poru is open every day during the week from 9 am to 5 pm. If you want the place to yourself, you should get there by 8:30 am so you are amongst the first people yhere. This will give you a head start and some time to enjoy the natural beauty of the waterfalls in peace.  

Price : Kerala State Forest Department is responsible for the maintenance of Paniyeli Poru. They charge a nominal fee of entry - rupees 10 for everyone (barring children). Also, if you are taking a video camera to the waterfalls, you need to pay rupees 100 to be allowed. 

Interesting facts about Paniyeli Poru 

  • People in large groups come here during the summers to take a bath in the clear waters of Paniyeli to rejuvenate themselves. 
  • You can take a 20 km trek from Poru to Bhoothathankettu through the dense forest along the river. You can find local guides who will take you on this 6-hour trek. 
  • Poru to Malayttoor is another trek route that you should go on, however, you need to take the forest department’s permission to go on this trek. 

Travelling tips 

  • The best time to visit the waterfalls is between the months of -November and May. 
  • No food and plastic items are allowed inside the entry gate. 
  • The river is quite deep so do not try to go in the water by yourself. 
  • Carry a first aid kit if you plan to go on a trek, just in case.
  • Do not play loud music, as it will disturb others and the fauna as well. 
  • Tread carefully around the rocks as they are slippery.
