The beautiful Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh is a reservoir located at the foot of the Shivalik Hills and covers an area of 3 square km. The seasonal stream of Sukhna Choe that flows down from the Shivalik hills was dammed and this lake was created in the year 1958. 

The blue sky and the views of the Shivalik hills together make it a breathtaking sight. Visitors come here to spend a relaxing time while taking strolls or admiring the tranquil waters of the lake. Locals also come for morning walks and jogs.

The best time to visit Chandigarh is during the months of September to November when it has a moderate and pleasant climate, ideal for a city tour. The rains stop by September and there is flourishing greenery all around. 

Interesting facts about the Sukhna Lake

  • It was initially called the Chakraborty Lake, named after Birendra Narayan Chakraborty, the Governor of Haryana.
  • The lake was home to crocodiles earlier but there are none to be seen now.
  • Le Corbusier insisted on forbidding motor boats in the lake as well as vehicular traffic on top of the dam.

Chandigarh has an amazing bus service that makes it very convenient to reach Sukhna Lake. Additionally, there are plenty of autos available to take you there.

By air: Chandigarh airport is the nearest to the Sukhna lake and is located at a distance of about 22 kms. The airport connects to major cities of the country like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad etc. and is at a distance of 12 kms from the main city. 

By road: The Chandigarh transport undertaking (CTU) offers excellent bus services within Chandigarh and is the most convenient way to reach Sukhna lake. Chandigarh has an excellent network of roads and NH-5 passes through, it connecting it to some of the major cities.

By Rail: Chandigarh Junction Railway station is the nearest one to Sukhna Lake and connects the rest of the country with its excellent rail services.
