How to Go to Malaysia

By Air

Traveling by air is the best way to reach Malaysia. The Malaysian airlines offer a low-cost flight to Kuala Lumpur for the budget traveler. There are three significant airports in Malaysia namely, Senai International Airport, Kota Kinabalu International Airport and the busiest one, Kuala Lumpur International Airport. You can also take flights to Malaysia from the neighboring places like Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. By Rail

Keretapi Tanah Melayu commonly referred to as KTM is the Malayan Railway service that offers rides from Singapore, and Thailand. There are day-to-day trains that connect both Thailand and Singapore to Malaysia. There is no way you can reach Malaysia from India directly. You can land in either Singapore or Thailand and catch your train from there. Railways are the most preferred means of transport if you are traveling from Singapore, but avoid taking a train if you are coming from any other destination. The journey gets too long and tiring. You can book the tickets online at least 48 hours prior your travel to reserve your seat in the train ride. Duration of travel: It takes two days to reach Malaysia from Bangkok and 7 to 10 hours if you travel from Singapore. Approximate cost per person: It will cost you INR 600-2700 approximately from Singapore depending on the class you choose. Whereas from Thailand, it will cost you INR 1700-2000 approximately.

By Road

You have no way to get into Malaysia by road directly from India. However, if you still wish to take a glimpse of the scenic roads, you can land in any of the places like Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia and avail buses from there. These buses will take you to Peninsular Malaysia and Sarawak. From there, you can take taxis to reach your desired destinations. However, it is not advisable to self-drive, as you require an International Drivers Permit to do so. The roads are very comfortable offering you a pleasant ride to Malaysia. Duration of Travel: It will take you 8-9 hrs from Thailand and, 5-6 hours from Jakarta and Singapore. Approximate cost per person: It will cost you INR 1900-2500 approximately from Singapore. Whereas from Thailand and Indonesia, it will cost you INR 900-1200 and INR 2500-3000 respectively. How to travel by road: The most preferable way is to take buses. Take a bus from either Singapore, Jakarta or Thailand to Kuala Lumpur.

By Sea

Reaching Malaysia by ferry is the most relaxed option. Sumatra, Thailand, and Indonesia are well connected to Malaysia. You can take a luxury cruise from either of these places to reach Malaysia as you relax on the cruise and enjoy your ride. Parts of Sumatra and southern Thailand are well connected to Peninsular Malaysia by ferries. Whereas, Sarawak, East Kalimantan, and Mindanao are connected to Brunei and Sabah respectively. On the other side, Singapore and Phuket offer luxury cruises to Malaysia frequently. Either way, you need to take a flight from India to these places and then opt for the cruise. Duration of Travel: The duration of travel ranges between 30 minutes and a maximum 3 hours to reach Malaysia from these destinations. Approximate cost per person: The cruise prices range between INR 15,000-22,000 approximately; whereas the ferries are relatively cheaper. The ferry rides will cost you INR 2,800-3,500 approximately.
