It is a massive structure located on the Tsarevets Hill in Veliko Târnovo. It is one of the most attractive monuments in Bulgaria which has been inhabited since time immemorial. This fortress has more than 400 houses, 18 churches and several monasteries, shops, gates and towers inside its complex. It is being said that the Byzantines built the first fortress in the 5th century. It was expanded and fortified in the coming centuries by several different rulers. There is a Tourist Information Centre which can help you in getting a guided tour in the English language.
