Encapsulated by the beautiful Eastern Ghats in Salem, Tamil Nadu, Yercaud is an invigorating paradise of breathtaking beauty nestled in the Shevaroys range. Perched at an altitude of 1,515 meters above sea level, it is inundated with dense verdant forests, luxuriant hills, massive coffee plantations and diverse species of flora and fauna.
Literally translated, it means ‘lake forest’ owing to the abundant forests near the Yercaud lake. 1. Big Lake
Dubbed as the Emerald Lake, the Big Lake is the most popular attraction in Yercaud. This green-hued lake is the only naturally occurring lake in South India. Flanked by majestic mountains and lofty hills and fringed with lush verdant garden on its banks, the lake with natural shoals is a stunning sight to behold. The floating fountain in the middle of the lake further enhances its appeal. Elevate your experience by indulging in boating activity in the quaint lake amidst the picturesque ambience.

2. Pagoda Point
A beautiful viewpoint, Pagoda Point offers a resplendent sprawling view of Salem, the loop road, Kakambadi village and the Eastern Ghats. Visitors can revitalise and soak in the splendid views of lush greenery while enjoying the cool breeze, clouds hovering overhead and the mesmerising sunrise and sunsets. Also known as pyramid point, it gets its name due to four piles of stones arranged in the shape of a pyramid resembling a Pagoda or temple tower and is believed to have been built by the local tribes. Near the Pagoda Point, there is a Sri Rama Temple that is devoted to Lord Rama. It is an important pilgrimage site for the locals and visitors who seek solitude and tranquillity.

3. Botanical Garden, One of the best places to visit in Yercaud
A visual treat for nature aficionados, it is one of the Yercaud tourist places that always make it to the itinerary. A spectacular greenhouse, its residents, include exotic species of flowers and plants. It is divided into different sections like a rock garden, butterfly garden, topiary garden, bonsai garden, foliage garden, herbal garden, water garden, and sensory garden. It also boasts of the third largest Orchidarium in India, showcasing around 250 different species of orchids out of which 30 are endangered species. The botanical garden is also famous for housing the famous Kurinji flower that blooms only once in twelve years.
4. Killiyur Falls
One of the prime attractions, it is a must see place in Yercaud. Located in the Shervaroyan hill, it is one of the highest and bewitching waterfalls in India cascading from a height of 300 feet. An enchanting sight especially during monsoons and winters, embark on a 2km trek through the forest with 200-250 steep steps to reach the falls and enjoy swimming or boating in the pristine waters.
5. Shevaroy Temple
Enveloped in mist and fog and perched at the highest point of Shevaroy hills at an altitude of 5,326 feet, it is a black dark cave temple dedicated to Lord Shevaroyan and Goddess Kaveri. Built by the native tribals, it is one of the holiest places that will engage you spiritually. The natives flock to the temple annually in May to celebrate their festival. Trek through the rough terrain to reach the top that offers an incredible panoramic vista of the magnificent mountains, pristine hills and Yercaud town.
6. Lady’s Seat, Amongst popular places to visit in Yercaud
Amongst places to visit in Yercaud is the unique Lady’s Seat. A cluster of rock formations in the form of a seat, the lady’s Seat offers a marvellous vantage point of awe-inspiring scenery speckled with floating clouds, mist and luxuriant greenery. Stunning during the sunset, capture the beautiful sight of Mettur Dam and Salem town with the help of a telescope at the watchtower. It also has a place in British history. According to legend, it was one of the recreational spots for kitty parties for British women residing in Yercaud.
7. Anna Park
Your trip will be incomplete without visiting the Anna Park. Inspired by Japanese culture, the park showcases the beautiful Japanese method of horticulture and boasts of a myriad collection of plant species native to Eastern Ghats of Shevaroy hills. It is an ideal place to visit for families with children as you can enjoy a fun picnic amongst greenery while the children can spend an amusing time on the swings and slides.
8. Tipperary Viewpoint
Located at the southernmost end of Yercaud, the Tippery Viewpoint offers magnificent views. The highlight of this point is the Elephant Tooth Rocks, which are believed to be the remains of a meteorite which fell on earth. Bright white, it is a beautiful contrast to the black granite of the region. Abounded by dazzling views of the surrounding lush greenery and Yercaud hills, it is a favourite spot of adventure enthusiasts to embark on trekking activity.

9. Deer Park

Deer Park is a perfect place for animal enthusiasts and families. A wonderful picnic spot, it offers visitors a majestic playground to indulge in outdoor activities and breathing fresh air. 10. Silk Farm
An exciting and different place not to be missed is the Silk Farm. One of the traditional arts of Yercaud, you can witness the technique of silk production here. Take a guided tour to understand the lovely process of breeding silkworms and producing silk from the cocoons. The silkworms are reared on mulberry trees. Spot the numerous cocoons and see the worms spin silk thread. The farm also depicts the history of how the skill was acquired from China to begin the production of silk in India.
