Koh Yao Noi

Halfway between Phuket and Krabi is a secluded Thai island known as Koh Yao Noi. Inhabited by a mere 3,000 locals, the 8-mile-long stretch of glittering shores and swaying palms is a hidden oasis within the Andaman sea. Women, here’s your chance to observe local Thais as they engage in coconut farming, fishing and rural homemaking. The most interesting part about this island is its varying topography. While the east is laden with deserted beaches, the centre is home to mountains and rainforest, and the west is graced with white paddies. Extremely safe and totally untarnished by tourists, you have the opportunity to trek, kayak and consume the tastiest of delicacies.

- Upon arrival at the airport, scout for stores selling tourist SIM cards. Acquire a data plan that is active for at least a month and receives connectivity everywhere. AIS, TrueMove H, and DTAC are the best ones.
- Try avoiding two-wheelers as Thai roads are extremely dangerous. If you have to rent a scooter, avail of the most reliable and well-known service around.
- Don’t opt for the cheapest price or quotation, when it comes to adventure sports. Those are usually the most unreliable.
- Get your Hepatitis B vaccine before your trip, to prevent food-borne bacteria.
- Always opt for bottled water.
- Select safe accommodation – hotels in busier areas, security personnel, rooms with proper locks and safes, all-female dormitories.
- Be wary of drive-by bag snatching.
- Don’t walk alone on the streets and the beaches at night.
- Women are not welcome in certain temples, so always check the signage.
Traveling between destinations
- Always avail of a travel/booking agent who will chalk out a safe and cost-effective plan for you.
- If you’re using a taxi or tuk-tuk, make sure the metre has been switched on.
- If you’re traveling by train, always go for the lower bunk.
Notes of caution
- Areas cradling the Malaysian border are considered to be politically unsafe.
- Areas that promote sex tourism are illegal and can be extremely dangerous.
- The beaches are not safe at night.
- Locals are usually friendly. In case of any discrepancies, avoid picking a fight.
- Be wary of your attire. As Thailand is a Buddhist country, the locals are very traditional.
