The primeval beauty of the north-eastern part of India is straight out a fantasy land. The misty mountains, the sublime rivers, the list is endless. Tawang: The land of monasteries, Tawang is a frequented place by nature and religious enthusiasts alike. Situated in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, it is most famous for the Tawang Monastery, a 400 year old Buddhist hermitage. Dotted with a number of lakes, waterfalls and mountain passes, Tawang is an unexplored haven. The world’s second highest pass, Sela, calls this Buddhist abode home and is a must visit for every backpacker.
Cherrapunjee: Cherrapunjee, once famous as the wettest place on the earth, is nothing short of a misty paradise. Located in the state of Meghalaya, the place is dotted with limestone caves, and waterfalls. The biggest attraction of this hill-town is the Nohkalikai falls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India (335 meters). The nearest airport is the Shillong airport and one can also travel to this rainy paradise by taxi from Guwahati, the capital of neighbouring Assam.
Shillong: The capital of state of Meghalaya, Shillong is known by many names. To name a few Scotland of the East, Rock Capital of India and the likes. Nestled in the stunning pine covered hills, Shillong has long been a favourite amongst those who frequent the north-east part of India. The places to visit here are numerous like the Umiam Lake, Wards Lake, Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous North East India Culture, Sweet falls and many more. The food here is a divine mix of local and Chinese cuisines that will leave your mouth watering.
