Located amidst the verdant hills in Karnataka, this serene, sleepy hill station will seem straight out of a travel magazine’s glossy pages. Coorg is also known by its other name, Madikeri. This quaint hill station is packaged in exotic emerald landscapes and lush nature, to gift you a trip that will last in your memory long after you depart. Rejuvenation, at least, is sure guaranteed.
When you reach Coorg, you will figure out exactly why it is called the Scotland of India. Next to Ooty and Kodaikanal, Coorg is emerging as one of the most popular hill stations in south India.
Weekend of indulgence
Coorg is a great getaway for a weekend trip, which you can enjoy even during a short stay. It has a lot to offer in terms of scenic beauty and interesting sightseeing. The destination is a big, thriving centre for coffee and spice production. For acres, the land is covered under the blankets of green vegetation and manicured coffee plantations.
The locals are a curious mix of people too. The rural centre is also home to the unique Kodava race, thought to be the descendants of the migrating Persians, Kurds or the Greeks.
The weather in Coorg is another delight that you will savor with relish. The cool weather juxtaposes well against the haphazard terrain. Coorg is ideal for trekking, bird-watching as well as lazily amblings along the winding roads. There is a bunch of sights that you can visit to while you are here. You can start off with the Namdroling Monastery, Madikeri Fort, Raja’s Tomb, Nalakunad Palace, Abbi Falls, Raja’s Seat, Golden Temple, the Museum and the Zangdogpalri Temple.
Local cuisine
The authentic Kodava cuisine is something that you should definitely try out when you trip to Coorg. The pandi (pork) curry and kadumbuttu is a dish that is worth trying. Mutton as an ingredient is quite integral to the local cuisine. The Bembla curry (bamboo curry) is another regional specialty.
So pack your bags and set off on a trip to Coorg any given weekend and you will only return thoroughly recharged and rejuvenated.
