Best of Nepal with Muktinath Bhakti Yatra: A Customer’s Journey Through Nepal’s Sacred & Scenic Wonders
Table of contents
Himalayan scenery, timeless spirituality, welcoming locals and a journey that’s just a short flight from India.
I wasn’t looking for another holiday. I was looking for a pause.
The kind where you stop checking emails every few minutes. The kind where your mind finally slows down after months of work, responsibilities and the same daily routine.
For some reason, Nepal kept coming back to me.
At first, I thought of it as a quick mountain getaway. But the more I read about it, the more I realised it offered something different. Ancient temples. Himalayan views. Peace that didn’t feel manufactured. And a journey that wasn’t only about ticking places off a list.
That’s when I booked the Best of Nepal with Muktinath Bhakti Yatra tour from Thomas Cook. Looking back, it turned out to be exactly what I needed.
From walking through the incense-filled streets of Kathmandu to standing at the sacred Muktinath Temple surrounded by snow-capped peaks, every day felt different from the last. The warmth of the Nepalese people, the slower pace of life and the quiet moments in the mountains stayed with me long after I returned home.
Here’s how my Nepal trip with the Muktinath Temple Yatra unfolded and why I’d happily do it all over again.

Beginning an Unforgettable Nepal Journey
The excitement of the journey hit me right after I landed at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. After making sure I hadn’t left any luggage behind, I proceeded towards the arrival gate. There, I was quickly greeted by the Thomas Cook representative, who was waiting for me with soft drinks and a traditional Nepalese welcome.
The warm hospitality and refreshing beverage put me right at ease. Transfers were arranged, and we were swiftly taken to our hotel, which was our only stop for that day. At the hotel lobby, I spent a few minutes meeting my fellow travel companions before my room was ready. A hot cup of tea and the shared goal of Muktinath Temple Yatra soon turned the room full of strangers into a group of friends.
Some were buzzing with excitement at the thought of seeing the tallest peaks in the world, while others, like me, were looking forward to the Nepal spiritual tour. After our check-in and refresh, we headed to Thamel, Kathmandu’s bustling shopping and nightlife hub, in the evening. Upon our return, we had our dinner and spent the night at the hotel.
Seeking Blessings at the Sacred Pashupatinath Temple
Everyone says that a Kathmandu visit is incomplete without the Pashupatinath Temple darshan, and now I understand why. As per the Nepal tour package, the second day was all about Kathmandu sightseeing. We visited Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa, Durbar Square and other key attractions in the capital city. However, there was one experience on our Kathmandu, Nepal temple tour that stood out the most.
When exploring the charming lanes of Kathmandu, we reached one of the city’s oldest and holiest shrines. The sacred Pashupatinath Temple is on the banks of the Bagmati River. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ancient, pagoda-style shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Discovering the different legends associated with the shrine brought its rich history to life.
As we walked through the outdoor corridor, we got totally immersed in the scent of sandalwood. Guided by the flow of the crowd, we made our way into the main complex. The atmosphere was alive with devotion, worshippers chanting the lord’s name and many taking sankalp. If you are visiting, know that only Hindus can visit the inner sanctum and courtyard of the main temple.
The Newari two-tier, pagoda-style architecture made an imprint on our minds. The silver-plated doors, gold-plated copper roof and intricate wooden struts are a testament to Nepal’s incredibly rich artistic heritage. Inside the main sanctum, we were granted darshan of the incredible stone Mukhalinga of Lord Shiva. Standing there, I sought blessings for my loved ones and for our upcoming Muktinath pilgrimage.
Journey Towards Muktinath – Through Nepal’s Himalayan Landscapes
On the third day, we packed up and left Kathmandu. This time, we were headed towards the Muktinath pilgrimage. But first, we had a stop in Pokhara. The charming lakeside destination serves as the gateway to the Annapurna mountain range. Although I am not a big fan of the winding mountain roads, the scenic drive kept me completely distracted with a smile on my face.
Kathmandu’s dense city architecture quickly dissolved into snow-covered peaks, rushing rivers and lush green valleys. En route, we took a small halt, which became one of my favourite experiences on the journey. The cable car ride to Manakamana Temple. Traversing through lush valleys in a cable car is as breathtaking as it sounds. You really have to be there to enjoy it to its fullest. The shrine was not densely crowded. So after our darshan, we took our sweet time snapping some group photos.
Then we continued our way to Pokhara, where we checked in and stayed overnight at the hotel. The next day, our journey took us further into the mountains to Jomsom. It is a quaint town on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River in Mustang District. This was our final staging ground before officially starting our Muktinath Temple Darshan at dawn.
A Divine Experience at Muktinath Temple
This was it. The moment we had all been waiting for had finally arrived. The long flight of stairs to reach the temple complex scared me at first. The 300+ paved stone steps were not painfully steep, but we took a few “breathers” along the climb. Honestly, we just wanted an excuse to stand still at the steps and marvel at the scenic beauty of the region.
Upon reaching the complex, we learned about the shrine’s history and spiritual significance. Mentioned in ancient Puranas, Muktinath is a revered avatar of Lord Vishnu. This historic shrine is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. Knowing we were at an altitude of 3,710 metres, we took everything in at a slow, comfortable pace.
The central shrine is one of the Swayam Vyakta Kshetras in Hinduism. In Buddhism, it is worshipped as Chumig Gyatsa. It also features the Nepalese pagoda-style architecture, with wooden carvings, a golden pinnacle, and a multi-tiered roof. Inside the inner sanctum, Lord Vishnu sits in the iconic Padmasana pose.
Another fascinating element of the shrine was the 108 Mukti Dhara. These are cow-headed water spouts, channeling freezing water straight from the Gandaki River. It is believed that taking a bath in this water can cleanse one’s bad karma and previous sins. So I joined the other devotees for a spiritual cleansing. It sure was cold. Very col
As I offered my prayers at the main temple, I felt a massive wave of accomplishment. My eyes were definitely watery, which I can assure you were tears of joy and relief. Every bumpy road and early morning alarm was worth the effort. Surrounded by towering Himalayas, I think I finally found the absolute peace I had been searching for at the Muktinath Temple.
Capturing Beautiful Moments Along the Journey
A journey that connected strangers. Standing in front of our final destination. We shared laughs, happy memories and group photos that I will cherish forever.
Hands up in pure joy. A true sense of liberation. As you can see, reaching the sacred Muktinath Temple grounds was absolutely the high point of the trip. No pun intended, since we clicked this picture at one of the world’s highest-altitude temples (3,710 metres!).
The happy faces perfectly capture the joy of our Muktinath pilgrimage. Great company and grounding energy at the temple grounds. Just what you need for a successful spiritual journey.
Nepal’s Natural Beauty That Left Everyone Speechless
It’s one thing to see the Himalayas in pictures and another to experience them in real life. I have crossed paths with the mighty mountains many times in my life, but it still doesn’t stop me from being fascinated. The others and I shared the same emotions, especially in Pokhara and Mustang, where nature demands your full attention.
Every time I looked up, I caught a glimpse of the unyielding mountains staring right back. The white peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges draw an exceptional contrast against the lush green valleys of Nepal. For the first time in years, I was waking up before the alarm went off, just to catch the sunrise at its best.
I could have taken a million pictures, but none of them would have been good enough to properly define the fresh air or the profound stillness of the valleys. Nature felt like an elegant masterpiece in the gods’ abode.
Comfort, Care & Seamless Travel with Thomas Cook
I will be honest, I had no idea how to approach the Muktinath pilgrimage in Nepal. Everything, like the itinerary, logistics, and costs, was new to me. That too in a foreign nation. I just did not want to spend hours planning everything and miss out on key experiences. Thankfully, giving the steering wheel to Thomas Cook with their Best of Nepal with Muktinath Bhakti Yatra tour package was the smartest choice I made.
The itinerary was well-planned by travel experts. Perfectly balancing sightseeing, key experiences and rest. Everything, from start to end, went according to plan. We were able to acclimatise to the altitude and covered all the essentials. The accommodations were all comfortable, clean and spacious. The hassle-free on-site transfers and included meals really made the experience seamless.
A massive shoutout goes to our tour manager. They were the real heroes of our Nepal pilgrimage tour. Being kept in the loop at every step made the trip feel like a family vacation. They shared their knowledge of the terrain and briefed us on the Muktinath Temple protocols. Nothing was rushed, and we never felt lost. With their smooth coordination, all we had to do was show up and take it all in.
Memories That Will Last a Lifetime
While waiting for my return flight at the airport, a lot of thoughts rushed in. Yes, I feel a bit guilty as I say that; sitting there, I missed Nepal a little more than my home. All the excitement had come to its conclusion, and now I was left with the feeling of gratitude and accomplishment.
The spiritual upliftment that I got from this trip will be my best souvenir. I made some lifelong friends along the way. The very strangers with whom I shared the bumpy rides through the rugged Mustang terrain. I remembered the echoing bells of the Pashupatinath Temple, the freezing water of Muktinath Dham and the imposing brilliance of the mighty Himalayas.
The hearty laughter and peaceful realisations. These are the memories that I will forever cherish. Sitting there, I felt fulfilled and had an overwhelming desire to be back. Covering the same roads and the same shrines, hopefully with like-minded companions.
