This Eid festival can last from one to three days, with each day marked by grand celebrations.

When is Eid-Ul-Fitr 2025?
Eid-Ul-Fitr is one of the two major festivals in Islam and is observed annually as the holy month of Ramadan concludes. 1. Chaand Rat: Unique to South Asia, the eve of the Eid-Ul-Fitr festival is called Chaand Raat. On this occasion, i.e., the last day of Ramadan, people with their families and friends gather in open areas to catch a glimpse of the crescent moon. Once the moon is seen, people greet each other with “Eid Mubarak” and engage in shopping, socialising and other festivities.

2.Eid Prayer: On the morning of Eid-Ul-Fitr, Muslims in their local community gather in large numbers to participate in the special Eid prayers, which include a discourse to strengthen spiritual teachings. Led by the Imam, This is held at the mosque or a large open area.
3.Exchange greetings: After the special prayer is over, people exchange greetings, “Eid Mubarak” with each other alongside a cordial embrace.
4.Charity (Zakat al-Fitr): Zakat al-Fitr is one of the main Eid rituals. According to this tradition, every capable Muslim gives Zakar al-Fitr, which means making a charitable donation to individuals in need. It is a selfless act of kindness that ensures everyone can be a part of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations without any constraints. The Zakat al-Fitr can be in the form of money or food, even in a small amount.
5.Gatherings: Then, everyone comes together, family and friends visit each other’s homes, exchange gifts, share food from the same thaali, engage in hearty conversations, etc. Also, what makes Eid-Ul-Fitr celebrations in India so special is that even though it is a Muslim festival, people from other faiths also get a cosy invitation to dine at the house and be a part of this joyous occasion from their Muslim friends, colleagues and known associates. It is a festival of making bonds of love and friendship stronger.
6.Feasts: Special dishes are prepared during Eid-Ul-Fitr, such as Haleem, Galouti Kebab, Biryani, Seviyan, kheer, sheer khurma, falooda, etc.
7.Traditional attire: Men and women dress up in elaborate traditional attire. New clothes are specially bought for this occasion while existing best clothes still work for many.
