The Jog Falls has the distinction of being called the ‘Niagara of India’ and is one of the highest and most beautiful waterfalls in the country. The waterfall sits snugly on the border of Uttara Kannada and Shimoga district. The waterfall is locally known as Jogada Gundi and Gersoppa Falls too. The waterfalls are formed when the Sharavathi River falls from a height of 253 metres in four streams named – Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer.  The Rocket is named so because of its ability to nosedive at rocket speed. The Roarer roars as it falls and hence the name.

Just next to the parking lot is a viewpoint. A narrow path takes you straight to the foot of the waterfalls. This is a steep walk of around 45 minutes one way. Walking on the path can be dangerous during the rains, as the pathway gets slippery. A trek down to the foot of the waterfalls is recommended only in summers or winters.

2. Shivanasamudra Falls

The Shivanasamudra falls is one of the most popular getaways from Bangalore. Located in Mandya district, about 81kms from Mysore, this waterfall is also known as Bluff. Two streams of water come together to form this spectacular waterfalls falling from a height of 320 feet.  The two streams are a part of the Kaveri River and are called Gaganachukki falls and Baharachukki falls. The two together form a single stream as they fall and are collectively called Shivanasamudra Falls. The waterfalls and the surrounding scenery is a delight to watch, especially in the monsoons. 3. Gokak Falls

The Gokak Falls is located in Gokak taluka of Belgaum district.  It is often referred to as the mini version of the Niagara Falls, this waterfalls, falls from a height of 171 feet through a sandstone cliff. The waterfall is formed by River Ghataprabha and has a horseshoe-shaped edge. There is an old temple depicting the Chalukyan style of architecture, dedicated to Lord Mahalingeshwara just near the waterfalls. Right across the river is a hanging bridge which is at a height of 201mts and offers an astounding view of the waterfalls. At any given time, only 30 people are allowed on this bridge. The waterfall is located 6kms from Gokak town and 65kms from Belgaum city.

4. Iruppu Falls

Sandwiched between the two villages of Kutta and Srimangala in Coorg District, the Iruppu falls is another one of the magnificent waterfalls in Karnataka located in the Bramhagiri hills. The locals also call it the Lakshmana Tirtha falls. Mythology connects the falls to the Hindu epic, Ramayana and hence the name. The falls plunge down from a height of 170 feet at various levels amidst dense forests. The falls are formed by streams from the Bramhagiri peaks and Lakshmana Teertha and finally ends up joining River Kaveri.

You can trek through the Narimale forest camp to the Bramhagiri peak with permission from the Forest Department. The route is filled with scenic views all throughout. There is a Rameshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva which is believed to have been founded by Lord Ram himself.

The Abbey falls is surrounded by fragrant spice plantations and exuberant coffee estates and is about 8kms from the Madikeri bus station.  The British called this the Jessi falls in memory of the daughter of the first British Captain of Madikeri, Captain Chaplain. 6. Hebbe Falls

Located inside the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve, the Hebbe falls is surrounded by thick forests and lush coffee plantations. The fall rushes down from a height of 550feet in 2 stages, rightfully named Dodda Hebbe (Big Falls) and Chikka Hebbe (Small Falls). Take a dip in the pool as it is believed to have therapeutic properties.  The waterfall is situated inside the jungle and comprises of a steep trek of almost 2kms through the forest. 8. Unchalli Falls

About 54 km away from the Jog Falls, near Sirsi in Uttar Kannada district is the Unchalli Falls, also known as the Lushington Falls. This waterfall is 380 feet high and is situated amidst thick forests. Formed by the Aghanashini, this waterfall is also known as Keppa Joga owing to the sound the stream makes.  From the entry gate, it takes about half an hour trek to get to the falls. Travellers and enthusiasts can enjoy the top view of the waterfall, they can further explore the falls by taking the stairway to the bottom of the fall. It is recommended that this downward trek is done only during the summers and winters.

10 km away from Kemmangundi is another wonderful waterfall. The Kalhatti or Kalahasthi falls forms an impressive view as it cascades down from the Chandra Drona Hills from a height of 400 feet. The Veerabhadreshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is another major attraction here.

The Godchinamalki Falls is also known as the Markandeya falls and is situated in the Belgaum district which is about 35 km away from the famous Gokak falls. The falls streams into two sections, one plunging at a height of 25 meters and passing by a rough ragged valley and the other taking a plunge at the height of 20 meters.

This waterfall is accessible by two routes, one from the Gurusiddeshwara Temple and the other from Malebail Road.

Formed by the tributary of River Anhanashini, this waterfall is surrounded by lush green forests and narrow pathways. Falling from a height of around 200 feet, this waterfalls is just about 1km from the Sirsi-Kumta road.  A narrow walkway from the parking area takes you to the fall.  This walk is about 20 minutes long and you are sure to lose the count of time as you walk amid the hues of greens that colour the forests leading to the waterfalls in Karnataka.
