Exploring South Korea: Busan

Attractions in Busan

Yongdusan Park

The park’s name comes from the two terms, Yongdu, meaning “Dragon’s head” and San, which means “Mountain”, owing to the fact that the mountain park resembles the head of a dragon. At the park, you can visit Busan tower, a 120-meter-high tower offering resplendent views of the park and the city of Busan. Visiting Yongdusan park is a great way to escape the noise of the city and appreciate being in big open spaces. While you’re exploring the park, make sure you check out the Flower Clock, Locks of Love, Bronze Dragon figure and most importantly, the statue of Yi Sun-sin, a 16th century naval hero.

Songdo Marine Cable Car

Originally started in 1964 as the nation’s first cable car, it was recently reopened in 2017. This technological marvel is not your regular cable car. The track which is approximately 1.62 km is lined with 39 individual cable cars of which 13 have a glass floor. If this wasn’t enough, the view from the ride is simply breathtaking. Enjoy the picturesque scenery from emerald waters to mountains and cliffs. Head to Songnim station to ride the cable car which will make its final stop at the gorgeous Amnam Park in the west side of Busan. This is the perfect way to get all the super cool aerial shots as Busan is too beautiful to be seen only on land!

Haedong Yonggungsa

Built in 1376, this Buddhist temple is as old as it gets. A one-hour drive from the city, you will find yourself at Haedong Yonggungsa, a one of its kind temple set by the shore. The glorious monument, first built in the 13th century was destroyed during the Japanese invasion of Korea, between 1592-1598 and eventually restored in 1930. Today, the temple complex is one of Busan’s most visited places owing to its scenic views and sacred aura, a perfect mix of spirituality and nature. Make sure to take loads of photos.

Haeundae Beach

Often considered to be one of Korea’s most renowned and beautiful beaches, Haeundae Beach is also the hub for various cultural and recreational events that locals celebrate throughout the year. Just a short subway ride from the city and you will find yourself at this stunning beach that offers stunning views of the city’s skyline. Once you have basked in all that summer sun, have a quick bite at one of the beach’s various eateries while enjoying a breath-taking sunset.

Gwangalli Beach

Located down south of Busan is Gwangalli Beach, commonly known as Gwangan beach. The beach spans for over 1.4km and is shaped in the form of a crescent. It is surrounded by a wide array of restaurants, coffee shops and nightclubs. This beach is also home to Busan Yachting Centre that gained fame during the 1988 Summer Olympics. Gamcheon Culture Village

At Gamcheon Culture Village, colour meets the eye in every direction you could see. This interesting mix of chaos, colours and rich art was formed in 2009 when the slums on the side of a steep hill were painted in various pastel colours to look like lego bricks. Spend time soaking in the beauty of this place, get lost in the alleys that are all different from one another, snack on some of the most authentic street food and witness some of the most unique street art you have seen. This is the kind of place that makes some of the most Instagram worthy photos.

Food in Busan

A place for foodies, dive into a different world of Korean specialties. From seafood to craft beer, Busan’s cuisine scene is thriving and happening. Here are some of the best dishes you can try when you’re in Busan:
Ssiat Hotteok (Seed Pancake) – Hotteok is a delicious sweet Busan specialty that is basically a pancake made of rice flour. Filled with brown sugar and cinnamon, it is first deep fried and later coated with a crunchy heap of seeds and nuts.

Eomuk (Fish Cakes) – Seafood lovers, Busan is the best place for you! Eomuk is a processed seafood product that combines various cuts of white fish with salt that is steamed until it is fully cooked. You can also choose between different varieties of Eomuk that cannot be found elsewhere.

Milmyeon (Wheat Noodles) – Who doesn’t adore a big bowl of noodles! Quick, easy and super yum, Milmyeon are cold noodles made of wheat and served with a chicken or beef broth. To top it all off, the noodles are garnished with slices of freshly cut vegetables, a slice of meat and boiled egg.

Samgyeopsal Kimbap (Pork Belly Kimbap) – Some might call it Korean sushi, Kimbap is rice wrapped in seaweed and filled with sliced vegetables and meat. The dish which is commonly served in Korea is usually stuffed tuna, anchovies or beef. In Busan though, Kimbap is also stuffed with pork belly, hence making it a must try dish when in the city!

Markets in Busan

Gukje Market

Established during the Korean War in 1950, Gukje Market is the largest market in Busan. Right from the moment you step into this market, you will be transported into a bohemian, vintage vibe with shops selling some of the most unique, stylish and extravagant pieces at very affordable prices. Gukje Market is the perfect place for thrift shoppers and bargainers who love exclusive pieces There is literally something for everyone and if vintage isn’t really your thing, head to Nampo-dong, a commercial shopping centre very close to the market.

Haeundae Market

Fish, fish and more fish…located along the coastline is Haeundae Market, the one place to find the freshest seafood, fruits and vegetables in Busan. Going to this market gives a true glimpse of how the locals eat, shop and spend. Make your way through the busy streets while nibbling at bits of food or enjoying a bottle of beer at one of the market’s bars.

Jayu Market

Shoe-lovers, this one’s for you! We bet there isn’t another place to find footwear at prices as cheap as Jayu Market. Flock to the market and shop till you drop. This is a real steal deal; heels, sneakers or sport shoes, the market has it all.

Best time to visit Busan

Even though Busan’s weather is pleasant throughout the year, the most ideal time to visit the lovely city is between April-May or October-November when the weather is just perfect to lay at the beach or explore the busy markets without dropping a sweat.
