All You Need To Know About Mauritius Weather
Table of contents
A tropical island, and a beach lover’s paradise, Mauritius has been a coveted vacationing destination for quite some time now, and for a good reason! While the Mauritius weather remains marginally the same throughout the year, there are some factors that one needs to keep in mind before planning a visit to the beautiful island:
Mauritius weather – Temperatures

Mauritius is blessed with a mild, tropical climate throughout the year. Little to no seasonal changes or variations occur, disrupting the temperature. The Mauritius weather remains pleasant and sunny. The beautiful country has two seasons; a humid summer from November to April, and a dry and cool winter from June to September. October and May remain the transition months in Mauritius. The warmest months of the year are January and February, with an average temperature of 29.2 degrees Celsius. The coolest months are July and August, with temperatures of 16.4 degrees Celsius.
Rainfall
The overall weather in Mauritius is magical! It often happens in the country that it rains in one area, while the sun shines brilliantly only a few kilometres away! The rains occur in almost all of the months, but December to April are the wettest months. These months have occasional tropical cyclones, leading to heavy rainfall and very strong winds. The rainfall, of course, varies from region to region. But, the long term means annual rainfall over the island has been known to be 210mm. What beautiful beaches these must be!
Sunshine Hours

The island of Mauritius is replete with the sunshine for up to 6.5 to over 8 hours daily.
The summers see an earlier sun rise, at about 5 o’clock, whereas the winters start an hour later. In the summer months, the high grounds are showered with 6 hours of bright sunshine, whereas the coastal regions get 7.5 to 8 hours of bright sunshine. In the winters, the Central Plateau receives 5 hours of sunshine, whereas the coast is allowed 7.5 hours.
Sea Temperature

The sea temperature around Mauritius is generally pleasant all-year round, ranging from 26-29 degrees Celsius in the summers to 23-25 degrees Celsius in the winters. Strong anticyclones in the winter sometimes result in the sea temperature to fall by 2 or 3 degrees Celsius. The excellent and ideal sea conditions are a result of the coral reef surrounding the whole island. The reefs also make it the ideal location to learn how to dive and enjoy the adrenaline rush the wide range of sports activities bring! Heavy rains may cause a change in the temperature of the waters.
Winds
Sand in your toes, and the wind in your hair; that’s the way to vacation! In Mauritius, the sun is positioned somewhere close to the equator in the sky permanently, causing extreme heating of the country underneath. Trade winds are surface winds that blow from the subtropical high-pressure zone. These south-east trade winds have a direct effect on the climate of Mauritius. They push the clouds to collect at the mountainsides in the south east of the island, after which the clouds slowly release their saved up humidity in the form of rainfalls and strong winds.
Cyclones
While the aforementioned south-east trade winds blow throughout the year, they are actually a pretty harmless and pleasant event. However, in the case of a cyclone, the situation can get pretty out of hand. Cyclones originate during the months of January to March. Air and water temperatures rise pretty quickly during the time. Statistics state that Mauritius is in the centre of a cyclone only every 5 years. Nevertheless, the island is hit by the remnants of three to five storms. In case of a cyclone alert, immediately look for shelter in public office buildings, or churches. The weather will calm itself down in a matter of a few hours.
Mauritius weather – best time to visit

Mauritius is the dream location for most family vacations. The Mauritius weather is warm and pleasant for most of the time through the year. It presents itself as the perfect year-round destination. For the beach babies, the summer months, are ideal. The cold Mauritius weather during the winter months will reduce the humidity in the atmosphere, and that is the perfect time to indulge in activities such as hiking, trekking, and quad biking. Diving enthusiasts need to circle in the months of December through March for the clearest waters ever.
