Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Kathmandu by Helicopter: A Journey of Faith, Adventure & Transformation
Table of contents
We often embark on journeys to experience new things or to find ourselves. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is clearly the latter. For centuries, this remote destination, peeking from the rugged mountain terrain, has called upon countless devotees like me for one of the world’s most sacred pilgrimages.
Ever since I was little, I have heard stories of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake. The enchanting aura of the place, as reflected in stories and personal experiences of others, has always resonated with me. But let’s be honest, reaching the “Roof of the World” is no easy task. It requires proper planning and physical endurance.
So, when this opportunity for a once-in-a-lifetime experience presented itself, I knew I had to be smart about it. In June 2026, I answered this spiritual calling alongside a group of fellow Thomas Cook travellers. This blog acts as the chronicle of my Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Kathmandu by Helicopter.
Over the course of my trip, I watched strangers become my family, stood speechless at the scenic sights at 15,000 feet and experienced firsthand how accessible this iconic journey has become. Here’s everything I found.
About the Journey
Before getting into the details of my Kailash Mansarovar Yatra experience, let me first give an overview of the journey. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage. It is situated in the Transhimalayas’ Gangdise Shan mountain range within the Tibet Autonomous Region.
In Hinduism, the holy Mount Kailash is said to be the abode of Lord Shiva. I have also learned that Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake are sacred sites in the Bon Religion, Buddhism, and Jainism. Hence, it draws seekers from all walks of life.
For my journey, I went with this Kailash Mansarovar tour package by Thomas Cook. Here are the details:
Package name: Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Via Kathmandu – By Helicopter by Thomas Cook.
Travel style: Helicopter-assisted journey with on-site drives and some high-altitude trekking.
Suitable for: Pilgrims seeking a shorter yet comfortable route.
This specific itinerary is designed for those of us who want an immersive experience without the challenging weeks of overland travel. Spoiler alert: it was the perfect match! The helicopter transfers were a game-changer. They significantly reduced travel time and successfully bypassed exhausting overland stretches.
Beginning of the Sacred Journey from Kathmandu
My Mount Kailash Yatra officially kicked off in the culturally vibrant, historical city of Kathmandu, Nepal. As I arrived, I was quickly greeted by a few of my fellow travellers. The enthusiasm and excitement in the air were unmistakable.
After checking in at the hotel, I got the notification to meet on the ground floor for the group orientation. There, we quickly introduced ourselves to each other and bonded over our shared goal. In the meantime, we were briefed on our Mount Kailash pilgrimage. I won’t lie, I think we all were already visualising the mountains.
The energetic chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Om Namah Shivaya” concluded the briefing and were the prelude to the upcoming journey. After a short local sightseeing tour and overnight stay in Kathmandu, we were ready for the next day. That’s when the real transition began as we left the capital for Nepalganj, the next stop on our Kathmandu to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
It wasn’t long before we headed to Simikot, which officially signalled the beginning of our sacred Mount Kailash Yatra.
First Glimpse of the Divine – Mount Kailash
Nothing can prepare you for the Mount Kailash darshan in real life. Of course, I have seen countless pictures and videos before. But when the peak finally broke through the horizon in front of my eyes, the feeling was entirely new. As the sun’s first light reflected on the rugged mountain, its white canopy turned gold.
After an initial, collective gasp from the group, we were left completely speechless. The silence that followed was a powerful one. A mix of admiration and devotion. Many of my fellow pilgrims dropped to their knees, offering their first prayers. Chanting “Om Namah Shivaya”, I joined them. In the middle of nowhere, it suddenly felt like home.
What followed in the next few minutes was something magical. A sight of total fulfilment, uplifting chants and some tears of joy. Every chant felt powerful. I was happy to see that no one was pushing for photos. Everyone was taking in the experience on their own. Only after our souls felt full did we finally reach for our cameras to capture the memory.

Standing on the Shores of Holy Mansarovar Lake
With our hearts still full from Mount Kailash darshan, we headed to the next destination of our Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Nestled at an elevation of 4,600 metres, the Mansarovar Lake is a sprawling expanse of crystal-clear water. Needless to say, it is one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever laid eyes on.
The shifting blue and emerald shades of the water acted like a mirror. It soulfully reflected the striking landscape, including Mount Kailash. As I got near the shore, the spiritual gravity of the place washed over me. The peace was absolute.
I took off my trekking boots and walked along the shore barefoot. It was a grounding experience like no other. As the freezing water and smooth stones touched my feet, I felt an instant connection with the earth.
Soon, we sat by the shore, sharing incredible tales about the lake. Then, we had a guided meditation. Even with my eyes closed, it felt like I could clearly envision the holy Mount Kailash and sacred lake just by being in their presence. Before departure, I made sure to fill the rest of my camera’s memory card with solo and group photos. I mean, it’s not every day you get to take the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.
Spiritual Moments That Stay Forever

The unscripted moments were the highlights of my Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. While reaching the destination felt fulfilling in itself, the quiet that separates this world from the world back home left a deep mark on my soul. The prayers I offered felt like they had reached their intended destination.
Harmonising religious chants in silence with my fellow travellers was an absolute peak experience. From preparing for the pooja to performing the rituals, the line between the physical and spiritual dimensions never felt so thin. After we synced with the local rhythm and nature, we were able to truly experience the yatra to its fullest.
As you can clearly tell, I was in love with the tranquillity. Like a few others in the group, I eventually wandered off to find a lone boulder away from the crowd. This became the site of my solo meditation. Completely disconnected from the nagging of the modern world. Just me, my boulder and my inner reflections.
I know I can’t capture the entirety of these feelings in photos, so I am letting my heart serve as a vault. If I ever need a moment of peace, even in the most crowded place, I can easily steer back to my happy place. Yes, the boulder is en route to Kailash Parikrama.
The Kailash Parikrama Experience

I need to make some clarifications here. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra by helicopter doesn’t mean there’s no trekking. The Kailash Parikrama still demands some walking. And honestly, I came to the conclusion that walking the important sections is the better way to approach the Yatra.
Walking through the high-altitude, rocky terrain requires a decent level of physicality. My 4-day-a-week gym sessions really paid off here. For my fellow travel companions, especially the senior citizens in our group, this section was a true test of stamina. Thankfully, we all were triumphant in the end.
Reaching the highest point of the trek, Dolma La, was also one of the highest points of my journey. At 5,640 metres elevation, the sense of accomplishment felt ten times more rewarding. The sea of vibrant prayer flags, wildly snapping in the wind, created an iconic contrast against the white snow and grey rocks. I stood there, enjoying the views of Dolma La and the emerald waters of Gauri Kund.
It was just then that I realised I had exceeded my own perceived limitations. And so did the others. With words of encouragement and motivation, everyone was able to complete the Kailash Parikrama without any hiccups. Additionally, the helicopter transfers reduced the time-consuming Nepal-Tibet border logistics. If not for this saved time, I may not have been able to take up the journey at all.

What Made This Journey Special?
The Kathmandu to Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is not something you leave to chance. I have heard many tales where tourists faced challenges due to incomplete paperwork or improper planning. Hence, I chose to focus on the trip and leave the planning and management to Thomas Cook.
First of all, our tour guides were phenomenal. They were not just experts on the route, but also very friendly. Their perfect coordination ensured a seamless Kailash Mansarovar Yatra experience. The doubts I initially had about time and logistics were also taken care of. The helicopter transfers helped bypass difficult overland routes. On-site drives also assisted in our journey, helping us keep the trek manageable.
Going on a pilgrimage at 15,000+ feet means possible medical challenges. Thankfully, Thomas Cook did offer medical assistance during emergencies. This kept our worries in check. Also, I was happy to see that proper spiritual guidance was provided along the way. They arranged for a panditji and puja samagri for a group hawan.
Key sightseeing, comfortable accommodations, daily meals and complimentary gifts were also part of the itinerary. It felt less like a pre-planned tour and more like a vacation planned by a very organised friend.
Customer Reflections
After completing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, I can confidently say that it changes you, in a good way. I felt like I had transcended and reached greater heights. It’s like there’s a powerful truce between my heart and my mind now. Something that I will cherish for the years to come.
As our group made its way back to Kathmandu, the energy shift was evident. The nervousness of the first day had been replaced with grounded contentment. The emotions were shared by all group members. Some were still looking at the photos, while others could not stop talking about the majestic vibes of Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.
Our group was a true mix, with young adventurers, working professionals in their 30s and senior citizens. I think this is the only time I have seen such a diverse group agree on something. Conversations flowed endlessly on our way back.
The first look of Mount Kailash, the rituals at Mansarovar Lake, and the scenic beauty of Dolma La were some of the key talking points. Each memory brought out exhausted but radiant smiles.
Finally, we shared our gratitude with each other and the Almighty. There is a profound strength in a journey like this. The strength to turn complete strangers into one big family as they sought spiritual liberation.
