Kashmir: The Place Everyone Talks About. I Finally Went.

Snow-covered peaks, mirror-like lakes, warm Kahwa and views that somehow live up to the hype.

I’ll admit it. I wondered if Kashmir could really live up to everything I’d heard. “Paradise on Earth” is a big promise.

I’d seen the postcards. The films. The endless photos of Dal Lake, Gulmarg and those snow-covered mountains. Beautiful? Of course. But was it really that beautiful? The only way to find out was to go. So this June, I packed my bags and joined the Exotic Kashmir Valley with a Gulmarg tour from Thomas Cook.

A week later, I understood why people never stop talking about this place. Every morning felt like someone had turned up the colour settings on the landscape. We drifted across Dal Lake, wandered through Mughal gardens, sipped steaming Kahwa between sightseeing stops and stood quietly in front of mountains that photos simply can’t capture.

Here’s what my Kashmir trip was really like and why I’d recommend experiencing it at least once.

Journey Overview

My Kashmir visit was all about experiencing the destination. I was not going to spend hours handling bookings when there’s spectacular scenery to enjoy. Thankfully, opting for a Kashmir tour package made my experience more streamlined. Here’s a quick overview:

A Warm Welcome to the Valley of Kashmir

The moment I arrived in Srinagar, the shift was immediate. I had left the hot summer days behind. It was just me, the mountains and the gentle, cool breeze. Looking around, the tourists arriving and the ones leaving shared the exact same smile. One of anticipation, and the other of total contentment. With my vacation officially starting its course, I was very excited, to say the least.

On the ride to the hotel, I caught a glimpse of Kashmir’s scenic beauty. It featured towering mountains, a serene river and lush greenery. It was like a greeting from Kashmir itself. A short but immersive trailer of what was to come next. I was quite literally at the edge of my seat.

Upon reaching the hotel, I met with my fellow travellers. It quickly became clear that this was also a bucket-list destination for many others. Amid shared excitement and laughter, it was time for the Kashmir group tour briefing. The entire itinerary was explained to us by the Thomas Cook representative. Even though I already knew it by heart at this point, hearing it explained out loud made it real.

Exploring the Beauty of Sonmarg

After the warm welcome in Srinagar, we continued our journey. Next stop, the “Meadow of Gold”, Sonmarg. This serene hill town is a major part of Kashmir sightseeing. If I were to define the beauty of Sonmarg, I would immediately draw parallels to Switzerland.

Sonamarg sightseeing was a visual feast. You get endless meadows and lush valleys, with snow-capped mountains peeking from behind. The air here was crisp, with the fine scent of pine and wildflowers. As the landscape gleamed under the June sun, it put forward a striking contrast against the lingering snow. The familiar winter haven, now draped in lush greenery, was possibly my favourite.

If you have doubts about the best picnic spot in Kashmir, well, here’s your answer. Nothing beats Sonmarg in this regard. We took our sweet time exploring meadows and clicking pictures. I also spent some time identifying the towering peaks. They were Sirbal Peak, Machoi Peak, Amarnath Peak and Kolhoi Peak.

The next part of Sonamarg sightseeing was a group excursion. I had heard about Thajiwas Glacier before, but it was my first time seeing it in real life. In winter, the site stays covered in snow. In summer, it is a different story. It had a calmer vibe to it, which I absolutely adored. Some of my travel companions went for pony rides through the valley. With the fun they were having, I couldn’t resist joining in. And it was worth it.

Gulmarg – A Day Amid Snow-Capped Peaks

You cannot talk about Kashmir Valley without talking about Gulmarg. For me, the Gulmarg tour was easily one of the main highlights of the entire journey. Its name translates to the “Meadows of Flowers.” I found it to be quite an appropriate name. The beauty of its natural floral exhibition was undeniable.

People from all over the globe go on a Gulmarg tour in summer for this very reason. Lush green meadows with an elegant accent of purple Lupines. Lavenders, daisies, and other wildflowers also make their presence known.

Everywhere my eyes went was a panoramic treat. It was definitely the composition of flowers, unending meadows and the jagged mountainscape as the backdrop.

The cool weather during the Gulmarg tour really helped with the exploration. We paid a visit to the Maharani Temple. Perched on top of a hillock, it is an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. After paying our respects, we headed towards the Gulmarg Gondola.

You can cover the route on foot. But I picked a horseback ride on the way there and an ATV ride on the way back. Yes, both were money well spent. However, the pinnacle of the day was the Gulmarg Gondola Ride. With tickets booked in advance, the ride went smoothly.

The experience of gliding up the mountain with 360° views of the surrounding meadows, pine forests and snow-capped peaks deserves a shout of its own. At Phase 1, we stopped at Kongdoori Station. It was about taking a breather and enjoying the views with a bowl of hot Maggi.

Phase 2, Apharwat Peak, is where the real magic happens. In winter, it becomes a hub for skiing and other snow adventures. In summer, it’s all about embracing the panoramic Himalayan views with some hot tea or coffee. The Kashmir sightseeing in Gulmarg also offered us golden opportunities to witness the magnificent Pir Panjal range and Nanga Parbat.

A Walk Through Kashmir’s Famous Apple Orchards

Beyond the commanding mountainscapes and sweeping meadows, I found Kashmir’s gentle, charming side. The renowned apple orchards of the Kashmir Valley. This was less of a sightseeing trip and more of an experience.

Stepping inside a local apple orchard, I realised this was my first time interacting with the agricultural heart of Kashmir. Although it was not the peak apple season, we could see a bunch of unripe apples peeking from the green canopy. So, we spent our time talking to the orchard owners and farmers, learning about the harvesting techniques of famous Kashmiri red and green apples.

The peaceful surroundings and sweet fragrance had a way of calming the mind. Honestly, it awakened the little kid inside of me. I immediately made a mental note to return during the harvest season. You mean, I can take a basket and pick and eat apples as I like? Sign me up.

The whole visit offered a relaxed experience to all. It was our much-needed break during the Kashmir group tour. The visit also provided incredible photo opportunities for all of us. Everyone left with a big smile. I can tell it was something about the air. Likely, a bunch of apples.

Srinagar’s Scenic Charm & Local Experiences

Returning to Srinagar, there was only one thing left to do now. Explore Kashmir’s historical and cultural heart before catching the return flight. What stood out to me most was Srinagar’s joyful soul. Its warm hospitality, bustling markets and prominent tourist attractions are famous around the globe.

The wooden bridges (kadals) over the Jhelum River told a tale of its rich history. But Srinagar’s relationship with water doesn’t just end there. Dal Lake is the crown jewel of the city. My parents’ generation fell in love with Dal Lake through classics like “Kashmir ki Kali.” My introduction was through YouTube travel vlogs. But seeing it in real life? The cameras don’t do it justice.

The massive lake is dotted with colourful wooden Shikaras and houseboats, elegantly reflecting the blue sky and white mountains. I will never forget the boat ride. It was calm, soothing and filled with visual treats. Also, the floating market was a new experience for me.

During my Srinagar tour, the bustling markets shed some light on its unique culture. From Pashmina Shawls to dried fruits, just a day of shopping filled my second suitcase so fast. Just sitting by the Mughal Gardens, facing the Dal Lake, made my afternoons special.

Creating Memories Together
