A horrifying reminder of the times of apartheid, Robben Island is an intriguing and vital part of any tour to South Africa nonetheless. The place is ill-famed for being the region where Nelson Mandela and his fellow anti-apartheid activists were kept imprisoned for 18 years in a small cell. When here, you can listen to the first-hand account of the atrocities that the prisoners had to bear since many of the tourists in Robben Island were also the prisoners here at the time. Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and Nelson Mandela Gateway make remarkable spots for learning the history of this country.
