A horrifying reminder of the times of apartheid, Robben Island is an intriguing and vital part of any tour to South Africa nonetheless. The place is ill-famed for being the region where Nelson Mandela and his fellow anti-apartheid activists were kept imprisoned for 18 years in a small cell. When here, you can listen to the first-hand account of the atrocities that the prisoners had to bear since many of the tourists in Robben Island were also the prisoners here at the time.
