Representing religious freedom in the Netherlands, the Portuguese Synagogue dates back to 1665. Built by the Portuguese Jews it is an elegant and large building. This community settled in eastern Amsterdam after fleeing persecution during the 16th and the 17th-century. Somehow, the structure remains protected during the Nazi invasion of 1940. Today it houses ‘Tree of Life’ one of the oldest libraries of its kind within.
