Built in the 4th century BC it was the site for Panathenaic athletic events. However, this grand arena fell into disuse for several centuries following. Later in 1895, it was restored to its almost original grandeur. The seats of this huge stadium is built of Pentelic marble which can accommodate almost 70, 000 spectators at a time. In the 2004 Olympics, some of the events were organized here. Otherwise throughout the year, this stadium hosts several public events like concerts.
