About

Embark on a white journey and into the world of a young boy and his adventure with the magical Snowman. On a cold winter’s day, a young boy builds a snowman which miraculously comes to life at the stroke of midnight. Together, they play with various appliances, toys and other bric-a-brac in the house, all the while keeping quiet and being careful not to wake up the boy’s parents. After finding a sheeted motorcycle in the house’s garden, they take the bike and begin their fun and adventurous escapade to the North Pole. During the ride its engine heat affects the insides of the Snowman's thighs, and he cools off in the freezer. Later they encounter dancing penguins, jubilant snowmen, Father Christmas and the Evil Jack Frost.  Father Christmas gives him a scarf with a snowman pattern. The next morning after they return, the sun has come out and the boy wakes up to find the snowman has melted. The boy reaches into his pocket and finds the snowman scarf given to him by Father Christmas.

With beautiful music and lyrics by Howard Blake, including Walking in the Air, design by Ruari Murchison, lighting by Tim Mitchell, virtuoso choreography by Robert North and direction by Bill Alexander, The Snowman is a heart-warming blend of dance, spectacular visuals, storytelling, stunning sets and music performed by a live orchestra.

Interesting Facts About The Snowman Show

  • The West End adaptation of ‘The Snowman’ is based on the original book with a few exceptions including the addition of two characters - The Ice Princess and Jack Frost.
  • The Snowman opened at The Peacock theatre in 1997. Currently in it’s 21st year on stage, it is one of West End’s most popular and longest running Christmas Theatre shows.
  • The original Snowman story, written by Raymond Briggs and published in 1978, doesn’t mention Christmas at all. The scene where the young boy and the snowman visit Father Christmas was added to the television adaption that was released in 1982.
  • Since its release, the television adaption of The Snowman has been shown every single year at Christmas time.
  • There were originally two different versions of The Snowman stage production. Director Bill Alexander worked with composer Howard Blake on a version at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, and a ballet version, created by Robert North for his ballet company in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1993. The version we see today incorporates elements of both productions.
  • There are 42 people working on each performance of The Snowman, including 17 dancers, five musicians and 20 stage crew.
  • The show employs 265 individual props, ranging from lumps of coal for the snowmen’s noses to toy soldiers, a sleigh and even a motorcycle with a sidecar!
  • Staying true to the book and the television adaption, The Snowman stage production has no words and the story is told through mime, images and movement.
  • To mark the 30th anniversary of the original film’s release, a sequel to the original film was released in 2012, called The Snowman and The Snowdog.
