Manali in Summer (March – June)

Temperature - The air temperature during the season of summer fluctuates between 10°C and 25°C.

Weather – Located in the lap of Himachal, the dancing rays of the sun slice through the whites of this hamlet and give way to the greens. The summer season breathes life back into Manali with the daytime being comfortably warm and the night bringing with it some chilly winds. This makes summer the best time to visit Manali in. The cosy weather also allows you the opportunity to satiate the adventurer in you and engage in rafting, paragliding and trekking activities.

Significant events – This popular tourist destination is the busiest at this time of the year not just because of the pleasant weather; but also, the many unique festivals and events central to the culture of this hamlet. The highlight of this season is the Doongri forest festival, organised by women clad in traditional attire while they dance and sing as a tribute to their deity Hadimba Devi. If you visit Manali in May, you could just be a part of this age-old vibrant tradition. The Hadimba Devi fair is a great location not just for devotees but also photography enthusiasts to get some beautiful shots capturing the radiant atmosphere around them.

Why you should visit now – As it is the peak season, this time of the year is brimming with activities and buzzing with tourists. With this hilly heaven dotted with verdant landscapes in full bloom, a plethora of sightseeing and adventure activities can be engaged in especially during the daytime. Head to the Solang Valley to participate in some paragliding, if you have always wondered how it would feel like to be soaring through the sky. Solang will also show you snow-clad crests; Mount Ladakhi, Mount Hanumn Tibba and Mount Friendship.

Things to know before the visit - With the tourist season in full swing, be mindful of the overpriced tickets and accommodation. Hence, make sure that you book your tickets well in advance. Also, since this hamlet has a naturally cold climate; the nights could get chilly and send shivers down your spine.

Tips –Plan your activities and itinerary according to the weather. With the temperature dropping after sunset, make sure to be done with all sightseeing and outdoor activities before the sun bids goodbye for the day. While you pack, make sure you include both warm and cool clothes as well as sunscreen and some glasses.

Manali in Monsoon (July – September)

Temperature - The air temperature during the season of monsoon ranges between 10°C and 16°C.

Weather – This time of the year sees torrential downpours with an occasional threat of landslides. However, Manali looks brand new as a result of the aftermath of the rain showers. A sight to marvel at but a challenge to explore, this season sees a drastic fall in the number of tourists frequenting this region.

Significant events – The danger looming over Manali in the monsoon season has never managed to dampen the spirit of this region and its people. One of the main highlights of this season is the Haryali festival that celebrates the onset of the rainy season. Seven different types of seeds are sown before the festival, close to the household deities. The showers are then welcomed with some traditional dancing and singing performances. This festival is also celebrated with great enthusiasm by local farmers.

There are quite a few activities to engage in and sights to marvel at in Manali during this time of the year. Adding to your list of monsoon memories, are river-water rafting activities along the stretches of River Beas (make sure to sign up with reputed adventure sport groups who conduct these sports safely). With the water levels high throughout July and August, this activity is best experienced in the monsoons.

Why you should visit now – Away from the crowd and rush of the tourists, this season is ideal if you want to spend some time in isolation with your family. Hence, if you want to take the road less travelled by, this is the time to visit Manali in. While it would be wiser to avoid trekking at this point of time, you could head to Jogini Falls or pay a visit to Manali’s enchanting monasteries.

Things to know before the visit – Make sure you check the weather reports before booking your tickets and accommodation. Book a hotel that is centrally located, accessible and also has a central heating system since the nights could get chilly. Since it is the off season, do look out for some discounts and offers on booking and accommodation. Try not to engage in outdoor activities after sunset.

Tips – Do not forget to carry light weight and waterproof clothes to protect yourself from the monsoons. Always carry an umbrella when you venture out. You can also check out more ways on How to reach Manali
