Best Time to Visit to Lakshadweep

The Lakshadweep archipelago welcomes tourists all year through with a pleasant climate. However, as far as sightseeing and ease of travel go, October to March is the best time to visit Lakshadweep. This is when the place experiences Lakshadweep's winter and the weather is just perfect. Summer is from March to May and is also a good time to visit this island cluster. Avoid the monsoon as it is rather challenging to travel by sea to reach most of the famous islands, during the months from June to August.

The islands are a haven for sports enthusiasts and adventure seekers. The seas are wonderful in summer as well as in winter, and you can enjoy a host of activities, such as snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking and just plain swimming. Winter is ideal for sightseeing and there is much to see here on these scattered islands. Kavaratti and Minicoy especially are just suitable for picnics and day sojourns spent scrambling around the islands. While we did say that the monsoon is not the best season to visit Lakshadweep, you can visit the islands of Bangaram and Agatti just for a lazy holiday away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Whichever time you decide you visit Lakshadweep you will have an amazing time on this archipelago. Each season has its own charm and no tourist ever goes back disappointed.

Summer Season (March-May)

Lakshadweep during summer is welcoming and visitors to the islands of Lakshadweep can expect to have a pleasant time. The temperature usually stays between 22°C to 33°C. The days are warm but the cool evenings more than makeup for that. Summer is the best time to head out to the beach and enjoy water sports.

Monsoon Season (June-August)

Lakshadweep is welcoming all through the year, but it does become challenging in the monsoon. Yes, the entire spread of islands is not affected and it is still possible to visit a few spots via direct flights. Travel by sea is impossible as it gets rather choppy during the monsoon.

Winter Season (September-February)

Plan your vacation to Lakshadweep between September and May. The weather is perfect for sightseeing and you can also enjoy all the available water sports. The tropical land has moderate temperature, never wavering below 22°C and not rising beyond 36°C, making it the ideal time to visit this archipelago.

Or you can swim in the clear blue waters. If you wish, carry along a book and catch up on reading while sitting under a tree sipping on a cold drink. Lakshadweep in Monsoon (June to August)

Temperature: Avg. of 31 degrees high to 22 degrees low

Weather: There is the monsoon and then there is the monsoon in Lakshadweep. When the heavens open up on this group of islands, Lakshadweep turns into a beautiful paradise, but with an edge. The islands lose their tranquil side and strong winds and thunderous waves buffet all sides. The torrential rain and the undulating seas make it impossible to cross the waters to reach the islands. Clearly, not the best time for a holiday, the weather of Lakshadweep in monsoon makes it an impossible time to visit.

All is not lost though: you can still visit the beautiful islands of Bangaram and Agatti which are serviced by direct flights from Kochi. Traveling between the islands is only possible with helicopters. Unfortunately, the helicopters are restrained by the weather and cannot take you to the other islands during the rainy season.

Significant events: Lakshadweep has a predominantly Muslim population. It does celebrate some tribal festivals, the most prominent ones that you can enjoy are those that reflect the customs of this faith.

Id-Ul-Fitr is celebrated in August and is considered to be the most important festival celebrated throughout the year. The festival is a celebration of sighting the first new moon after the month of Ramadan – the month of fasting. The month ends on Id-Ul-Fitr and the day is commemorated by people visiting mosques to offer their prayers and reciting holy sermons. Huge feasts are organised at homes, and friends and relatives are invited over to partake in the festivities.

Bakrid is yet another significant festival for Muslims. This day indicates the last day of a devotee’s religious journey to Mecca. Legend says that Prophet Ibrahim decided to sacrifice his son’s life to demonstrate his devotion to his almighty. However, the son was replaced by a goat (bakri). From that day on began the tradition of sacrificing a goat on this day.

Why you should visit now: Nobody visits Lakshadweep during the monsoon season, and the two islands of Agatti and Bangaram will be devoid of the usual tourist crowds. And being offseason, you will get great deals on hotels.

Know before you visit: All beach activities are closed during this season. Other than Agatti and Bangaram, you cannot visit any other island in Lakshadweep.

Tips: Be prepared to stay indoors all the time. Carry plenty of books, board games and have ways to entertain yourself if you get bored.

Lakshadweep in Winter Season (September to February)

Temperature: Avg. of 32 degrees high to 20 degrees low

Weather: Now this is when you should be visiting Lakshadweep. The only problem will be the rest of the tourists who have been eyeing this gorgeous destination all year. Don’t let that bother you much, though. There is so much to do and see that you will not worry for a moment about these tourists. The weather is absolutely divine and you can move about in the warm sun, enjoying all the sights and attractions of Lakshadweep. And of course, you have many water sports to enjoy as well. Evenings and nights are cool, but being a coastal destination, it doesn’t ever really get cold.

Whether you come as a family or a bunch of friends, there is something for everyone at Lakshadweep. Honeymooning couples will also find the place to their liking. There are many private islands for them to roam about in undisturbed.

Significant events: Milad-Ul-Nabi, also known as Mawlid in Lakshadweep, is celebrated as the birthday of Prophet Mohammad, the last Prophet of Islam. According to legend, it is also the day when the prophet left his mortal body. Several religious meetings mark the day. Sweets are distributed and fragranced water (Attar) is sprinkled in public spaces.

Why you should visit now: You can enjoy the true beauty of Lakshadweep in the winter months. The weather, the attractions and the activities combine to form the perfect vacation.

Know before you visit: Winter is a popular time in Lakshadweep and you will be well advised to book your tickets in advance.
