Places to Visit in Galway

You’ll find one of Galway’s most popular structures towards the east of the Wolfe Tone Bridge. The arch gives the feeling of an ancient passageway through which trading ships and vessels pass. The Spanish Arch is believed to be an extension of the vast and expansive medieval walls.

The Eyre Square is not so much as a historical monument as much as it is a crucial and busy meeting place. The square during Christmas is lit up with all kinds of revelry making it one of the most memorable and magical sights to behold!

Is an Irish city really complete without its castle? The Dunguaire Castle is a 16th century tower-house located on the south eastern shore of the Galway Bay. It sits very comfortably on a rocky outcrop at the bay and is open for visitors every day. It’s especially incredible view when there’s more water in the bay! 

Located off main Galway, on Clifden Road, Brigit’s Garden is a Celtic inspired garden. Covering 11 acres of natives flora, this is the best way to give your Children an authentic glimpse into the very intriguing Celtic culture without making it boring!

You can never keep the kids away from aquariums! Take your little ones to the Galway Aquarium which is home to some of the largest sea and fresh water wildlife. Don’t miss the 120 tonne Ocean Tank that houses over 200 species of sea animals.

This is one of Ireland’s best tourist attractions. And if your kids love horses, then they’ll never want to leave this museum! Moreover, it’s a very interesting way of teaching your kids more about these beautiful beasts. Children can also take up horse riding, carriage riding or simply watch a variety of horses, ponies, deer, cattle, sheep etc.

The Galway City Museum is located right in the heart of the city. It’s a modern structure located on the banks of the Corrib River. Being so close to the Spanish Arch gives this place a very interesting feel, as if one is stuck in a whole different time! Inside the museum you will find various exhibits that display Galway’s extremely rich archaeology and cultural and historical heritage. 

This place can be best enjoyed by walkers and hikers. Whether you intend to stroll leisurely through the green expanse or do so intense hiking, it’s hard to not want to stay back in this National Park. The views from the top are incomparable. And if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the main city, this is just the place for you.

If you want to get the best of both worlds, i.e. enjoy the comfort of the woods and the thrill of the sea, Rinville gives you the perfect middle ground. This is a huge park with walks through the woods and along the coastline. It’s an especially lovely place for children- what with the abundance of space to run around and have fun!

Another marvellous gem from Galway, Salthill beaches are the postcard perfect beaches white soft white sand, shattering blue waters and an overall pleasant and calming atmosphere. The Salthill area in itself is a delight to visit since it’s so beautifully packed with ancient culture.
