City of Valetta

This city is closely connected with St. John of Jerusalem. It is built after the Great Siege of 1565. This city has become popular for its architectural buildings and monuments, with which the city is packed. It has been named after the Grandmaster jean Parisot de la Valette. Now, it is the capital of Malta.

Megalithic Temples

The islands of Malta and Gozo have seven of these temples for their credit. Ggantija in Gozo islands is popular for their very large Bronze Age structures in two of its megalithic temples. These temples are free standing buildings that are the oldest in history constructed 1000 years before the Egyptian pyramids. Other temples in Malta can be found in Hagar Qim, Mnajdra and Tarxien with outstanding and unique architectural marvels. Other two temples are at Ta Hagrat and Skorba complexes. All these are dated between 3600 and 2500 BC.

Hai Saflieni Hypogeum

This was built around 3600 to 2400 BC for burial and for sanctuary purposes. This is actually a rock-cut underground complex.

Christianity

Malta has people with ardent faith in Christianity and they are the oldest among the Christians in the world. It has 360 churches and chapels scattered all through the islands. St. Paul established Christianity here while he was returning to Rome as captive. The rising church towers dominate the skyline of Malta. Most of them are explicit pieces of architectural marvels forming an integral part in the lives of Maltese. They are with intricate decorations and full with stone sculptures. Very small chapels showcase great works of art. Some are samples of rock excavations, some cling to cliffs but all are quiet and serene places for worship.

National Museum of Archaeology

This fantastic museum is in Valetta and is open from 9am to 7 in the evening. The finest exhibits are the pre historic stone tools dating 5200 BC, the temple model of the pre-historic Marquette of ‘Ta Hagrat’ and the most impressive statues of ‘fat ladies’ Venus de Malta, resembling prehistoric Lucien Freud, the Hypogeum ‘sleeping lady’ and many other stone friezes from Tarxian temples. These are showcased at the downstairs and the Bronze Age art pieces are displayed at the upstairs.
