The highlight of your time in Kumarakom will be your stay in one of the luxurious houseboats houses on the breathtaking backwater lagoons that surround this gorgeous city. In fact, the origins of its name can be traced back to a deity known as Kumaran’s Akam who resides in the city’s oldest temple known as Kumaran. The city is also blessed with an abundance of fertile land which is used to grow staples such as rice and delicious coconuts that we all love and crave on a hot summers afternoon. The year 1874 saw the arrival of an English farmers knows as Alfred George Baker who claimed to stagger 500 acres of land surrounding the Vembanad Lake and unleashed the true agriculture potential of the region. Thus, marking a significant landmark in the history of this humble city.

Vembanad lake is the largest lakes in the Kerala and Kumarakom is made up of little islands perched alongside the lake. The lake is the life source of the city and centre of all activities. It is surrounded by lush green forests and beautiful landscapes. The endless rows on coconut trees give the city a tropical touch, and diverse fauna and flora just add that something extra to this already great city.

Kumarakom bird sanctuary is a haven for bird watchers and each year welcomes numerous migratory birds from all over the world. The 15-acre sanctuary is home to numerous species including but not limited to the Siberian Crane, Kingfishers, Moorhens, Ducks, Waterfowls, Heron, Egret etc.

But if w bird watching is not your thing, then you can always head out to the stunning Aruvikkuzhi waterfall which is surrounded by many rubber plantations. This is an ideal place to unleash your inner photographer as there are many beautiful landscapes just waiting to be captured.
