Yamunotri Glacier is the start of the Yamuna river. The foothills of the Kalind Mountain are the place of the worship where the temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna has been constructed. Yamuna river is considered to holy like the River Ganga and is considered as the second sacred river of Hindus. Yamuna river flows through many states taking care of the civilization and finally meets the Ganga in Allahabad, U.P. The Chota Chardham Yatra in Uttrakhand is to cover four different ranges: Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri & Yamunotri.
Yamunotri Dham can be reached by covering a trek of 13kms. Hanuman Chatti & Janki Chatti are the places to begin the trek to Yamunotri. Both of them are an extremely beautiful place offering the views of the Great Himalayas, the Yamuna river and The Ganga river. One can spot the river Ganges also that flows beside the Yamuna river.
There are hot water springs nearby the temple, where the devotees prepare potatoes & rice tied in a muslin cloth. The potatoes and rice are offered to the Goddess in the form of Prasad. Suryakund is the foremost Kund of Yamunotri. Gauri Kund is also very famous in Yamunotri, the water of this kund is not very hot, and many pilgrims bathe in this warm water spring. It is believed that Gauri Kund has the healing properties for different types of skin problems including acne and body pains.
As Yamunotri is located at an altitude of 3293 metres, it remains closed from November to April due to chilly winters. The entire Yamunotri is made inaccessible to the mankind as it receives abundant snowfall and faces minus degree temperature. The entire river is frozen and stands still. Once the temperature reaches to normal, it flows in full flow. Yamunotri opens on Akshyatithi and closes on Diwali. Both the opening and closing ceremony of Yamunotri is carried out by rituals and chants.
