Greece is one of the most fascinating countries in the world. Its origins go back to ancient times and it was even believed to be the birthplace of Western civilization. Naturally, there’s a lot of historical importance attached to the country and it’s one of the many reasons people come here. But it’s not just ancient monuments and buildings that attract tourists today. Greece has a lot going for it, right from delightful beaches, sparkling islands, spas, thermal springs and of course, the numerous archaeological sites that form a huge part of their attraction and charm.
Greece literally has thousands of islands and there’s so much to explore and see that one visit will not be enough. While Athens, the capital, has many crucial and ancient landmarks such as the Acropolis and the Parthenon, the other cities are equally fascinating. From sunny Santorini with its sparkling turquoise beaches and its delightful little villages to Corfu with its rugged mountainous landscape and its quieter beaches, Greece has so much to offer. Of course, Athens is the biggest draw but there are also places like Delphi, where people come to see the Temple of Apollo, and Crete which is the largest island in Greece.
Best Time to Visit Greece
The best time to visit Greece would be from the months of April onwards when it is spring, and the weather is beautiful and not too sunny or cold. Even the autumn months of September and October are very pleasant and perfect for travelling and sightseeing. After the heat of the summer, the autumn months can be quite refreshing. The interesting thing is that there are plenty of festivals during this time, including Easter and Chios.
Winters and summers are best avoided. The former is cold and damp while the latter is extremely hot and sunny. However, people have been known to make the best of their situations when they have arrived in Greece during the summers. The mountains are generally cooler, and the beaches offer some respite from the heat. Summers are also peak tourist times and you will find everything crowded.
How to Reach Greece
If you want to reach Greece soon, then the best way to do that is by flight. Athens has an international airport, the Elefthérios Venizélos International Airport where all international flights land. Once you reach Athens, then you can head on to the other cities and islands easily enough. There are airports in other cities such as Heraklion, Rhodes, Corfu and Thessaloniki as well.
Reaching Greece through other ways is also quite interesting. For instance, if you are coming from any of the neighboring European countries like Italy, Netherlands or even Turkey, you can get on an international train and reach Greece. From countries like Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey, you can come to Greece by road as well and the journey is quite picturesque. However, one of the best ways to reach Greece is on a Mediterranean cruise. The cruises directly land at various islands and it’s a wonderful and most enjoyable experience.
Places to See in Greece Athens
Athens is the capital of Greece and it’s where you will most likely land, if you are travelling to Greece by flight. Athens has a beautiful juxtaposition of the old and the new. It’s both modern and ancient at the same time and both these aspects of it are extremely favourable and quite unmissable. When you’re in Athens, you simply must visit the Acropolis, the Parthenon, as well as the Ancient Agora of Athens, the theatre of Dionysus, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Temple of Hephaestus. Athens also has several museums to help understand its ancient art and architecture.
Corfu
The old-world charm of Corfu continues to remain popular over the years. This delightful island brings some amazing views of the valleys, the coast and the spectacular mountains. It’s in fact a tiny city that is a world apart from the fast-paced frenetic lives that we normally lead. Its charm is never-ending, with its tiny boutiques and its pretty cobbled streets and sun-warmed beaches. If you come to Greece, do make it a point to visit Corfu for some quiet beachside relaxation and fun.
Mykonos
It would be impossible for a lot of people to not come to Mykonos when they are coming to Greece. It’s one of the best known hotspots of the country, especially because of its eclectic nightlife and its lovely little beaches. Mykonos is also known for its picture-postcard pretty houses which can be seen all along the coast. Apart from the many bars that make this such a happening place, Mykonos has several windmills and also a Folklore Museum which is quite interesting.
Santorini
The Grecian island with its black volcanic sandy beaches that is famed all over the world is Santorini, undoubtedly one of Greece’s most famous islands. But even if it weren’t for these stunning beaches, ringed by brilliant blue waters, Santorini has quite a lot going for it. From museums to archaeological sites to galleries and monasteries, there’s a little bit of everything here. One of the huge draws here is also the Santorini Volcano which is an active crater.
Delphi
Delphi is one of the most famous tourist spots in Greece. It’s one of the ancient towns and in those times, it was considered to be the centre of the earth. Another interesting fact about Delphi is that it was an important oracle dedicated to Apollo. You can see the Temple of Apollo at Delphi today, or rather its ruins as well as a theatre and a hippodrome. Some of the other famous things to see here include the Castalian Spring, the Corycian Cave and the Stoa of the Athenians.
Anafi
The tiny island of Anafi has a population of less than 300 people and if that doesn’t give you an indicator of how little known it is, not much else can. While most people like to visit the more famous places like Crete, Mykonos or Santorini, Anafi is indeed a hidden treasure. With quiet beaches, houses painted a stark white, and a monastery as well, Anafi is quite the hidden treasure.
Food in Greece
Fresh, tasty and delicious, Greek food is prepared using locally sourced ingredients and ensures that there’s a lot of olive oil. While the Mediterranean fare is generally considered to be among the healthiest in the world, Greek food also has the distinction of being really mouth-watering. Here are some of the dishes that you must try if you are in Greece.
Horiatiki Salata
This is a traditional Greek salad, made with juicy tomatoes, olives, cucumber, feta and olive oil. This fresh salad is rustic but hearty and you’ll fall in love with it, like the Greeks.
Fava
Greece is famous for its fava, made using yellow split peas, red onions, scallion and garlic. It’s often served with olive oil drizzled generously over it along with crusty bread and fresh vegetables.
Moussaka
You’ve probably tasted a moussaka already but you must have it in Greece because that’s where this eggplant based dish originated from. Creamy, delicious and filling, a moussaka is the best way to experience Greek cuisine.
Things to Do in Greece
A vacation in Greece can only mean two things for most people – relaxing by the beaches or visiting the many ancient monuments and being swept up in the grandeur of it all. But whatever your reason to visit Greece, you’ll certainly feel amazed by the beauty of it all, even as you sample some of the tastiest and freshest food you’ve ever had. Here are some of the things that you must do if you’re in Greece.
See the Acropolis
This famed monument is something else indeed. You simply must not miss it if you’re in Greece. Located in Athens, this citadel was earlier known as the Cecropia. It’s hard to believe that you’re in a monument that was built sometime around 495BC. This used to be the site of the statue of Athena in ancient times. There’s a lot of history packed in the Acropolis, so do make it a point to visit.
Enjoy Santorini
Santorini is said to be one of the most visited places, especially by honeymooning couples. It does make sense. The beautiful coastline, the whitewashed houses, the crystal clear ocean, it all seems like a dream. This island on the Aegean Sea is also famous for its volcanic craters. Filled with tourists during the summer months, Santorini is also famous for its wine and its fava.
Go on top of Mount Olympus
Adventurous people should certainly try to climb Mount Olympus and try to reach its summit. This is not for the fainthearted or those who are not in fit condition. It’s quite the trek but the views are remarkable and if you are a fan of Greek mythology, you will find it quite fascinating. Climbing up the mountain which was formerly Zeus’ throne is something that gives an entirely different sort of buzz.
Go to the Meteora monasteries
Meteora is a rocky landscape in Central Greece and it is home to 24 monasteries of which only 6 remain now. These monasteries have been built on craggy natural pillars and boulders and are quite breath taking. They have been given the UNESCO World Heritage Site status and with good reason. There also caves here which go back to 50,000 years ago. Obviously, prepare to be stunned by so much history and heritage.
Visit the Corinth Canal
The Corinth Canal has a relatively newer origin and it was built sometime around 1893. Although Nero and many others before him have been said to have started constructing this canal, it was completed only in the 19th century. The canal spans 6 kms and is actually quite narrow which makes it difficult for navigation. Today, only recreational boats cruise through the canal. Nevertheless, with its steep limestone walls, it’s quite stunning and certainly something you should see when you’re in Greece. The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf.
