A lesser-known fact is that Aurangabad is known as the ‘City of Gates’. In the past when Emperor Aurangzeb took over the reins of this city, he had fortified it from all sides, in the process constituting about 52 gates. Out of all these gates, only thirteen have still stood the test of time as the other had crumbled. The principal gates which have survived are Delhi Gate based in the north, JalnaGate(East), Paithan Gate(South) and lastly the Mecca Gate, facing westwards. What is worth noting is that the oldest and the biggest is the Bhadkal Gate, built in 1612.
