Places to visit in Darjeeling

Though the name can be deceptive, this is a sacred site for the Buddhists and the Hindu devotees. The hill is the original site for the Dorje Ling Monastery and it is from this monastery that the town got its name Darjeeling. Today, what remains in the monastery site are shrines and picturesque view of the prayer flags. A path down the hill leads one to a small cave which is dedicated to Mahakala and attracts Hindu devotees from around the country

It is one of the monasteries which was shifted from the Observatory Hill.It is known for housing murals depicting the life of Lord Buddha. Not far from the town centre, tourists can have magnificent view of the Khangchendzonga or Kanchenjunga. 

You cannot afford to miss this religious destination that is located near the town centre and consists of a number of odd white pagodas. Built by a Japanese organization, the best time to visit is during the prayer sessions when the hand drums are played. It is sure to be a satisfying and peaceful experience foe you.The tourists are also encouraged to participate in the session. 

Earlierknown as The Shrubbery Park, it is located approximately 10 minutes away from the mall. The park is the site for a number of musical programs when the local musical bands play. Recently, the park has been renovated and houses a gigantic statue of Hindu Lord Shiva in a prominent temple. It has also become one of the major reasons for visiting the place.

A wonderful collection of rare hill plants and orchids indigenous from the Himalayas is one of the many reasons you must make a trip to this park. 

Situatedat an altitude of 7,407 feet above sea level, this little town is famous for housing the highest railway station in the country. That is not the only reason why you should visit Ghum, however. There are a number of tourist attractions in Darjeeling such as the Ghum Monastery known to enshrine the rare image of Maitreye Buddha and the famed War Memorial over here.  

Approximately 50 kilometres away from Darjeeling, Mirik is a scenic destination which houses a number of monasteries and spots from where you get a good view of the Himalayas. The main attraction of the town is the SumenduLake which is surrounded by a picturesque garden.

When you ask most of the persons about Darjeeling,the first thing that  you get to hear about generally is the Toy Train travelling across the wide tracks and merging into the horizon. And yes, the first in the list of major attractions in Darjeeling is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or the Toy Train. The history of the train can be traced back to the 1880s. Today, it is one of the few hill railways that is operating in the country. Moreover, it is also listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is only the second railway to feature in the prestigious list. Do not mistake it to be just a toy train, as it also connects a number of hill towns to New Jalipaiguri through its steam service. During the peak season, you can also take a joy ride on the train. 

Tiger Hill is located in Darjeeling, in the Indian State of West Bengal, and is the summit of Ghoom, the highest railway station in the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway – a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Dating back to 1854, the tea estate is a popular tourist attraction in Darjeeling situated around the Hill Cart Road. Darjeeling has got a number of tea estates but none matches the scenic beauty of this particular one. A trip across this estate will also allow you to understand the processes involved in tea plantation, including the plucking, withering, fermenting and the drying process.
